I ask you: what blame falls on the free poet

if he seeks to portray the truth in verse?

They want him to remain committed

to his silence until he vanishes into the grave.

But the free poet's soul is filled

with passions that urge him to speak out or spur him on.

And they accuse him of unbelief for what he says,

though their faith, if sound, is worse than unbelief.

Why have these people grown so vexed with me?

Has my sin in differing from them weighed them down?

Their pressure on freedom of thought is severe,

as though they were enemies of freedom of thought.

And I may see no safety for myself in speaking,

so I fall silent about it, though it strikes sparks in my breast.

And I know that if I speak openly, they will tear

my skin with fanaticism's fangs and claw.

And how many a nation is heedless of its fate,

while the torrent of events has swollen and courses through it!
