درى أنه جاء من غير مقصد

فسارع للعود والعود أحمد

He knew that he had come without a purpose,

So he hastened to return—and returning is more praiseworthy.

وأكمل معدود أنفاسه

وكانت تردّد فيهِ وتجهد

And he completed his allotted number of breaths,

And they had come and gone within him, laboring.

وأطلق نفساً رأى أنها

متى علقت بالحياة تقيّد

And he set free a soul, seeing that it

Becomes fettered whenever it clings to life.

هو الموت لم ينج منه امرؤ

ولو أنه في بروج تُشيَّد

It is death: no one has escaped it,

Even if he were in towers raised high.

يموت القويُّ كما أنه

يموت الضعيف فهل من مخلَّد

The strong die, just as

The weak die—so is anyone immortal?

وما المرء إلَّا رهين الردى

فسبحان من بالبقاء تفرَّد

And man is nothing but death’s captive;

So glory be to Him who alone is everlasting.

هو اللَه يعبد في أرضه

كما أنهُ في السماوات يعبد

He is God, worshipped on His earth,

Just as He is worshipped in the heavens.

مصابك إن شئت تخفيفه

ففكر بموت النبيّ محمّد

If you wish to ease your affliction,

Then reflect on the death of the Prophet Muhammad.
