    تُلاحي عَدُوّاً لَم يَجِد ما يَعيبُها

    She is one of the bashful, fair-skinned women, pure of complexion;

    she disputes with a foe who found nothing to fault in her.

    For no raincloud between the two Simāk stars, flashing

    with light, then swept by its south wind,

    was lovelier than she the day she said—while among us

    were some rabble whose troublemaking was feared—

    “You feigned helplessness, so you made do with others instead of us,

    until the day each soul is met by its beloved.”

    I wished—though love avails nothing—that she

    were my share of this world, and I her share.
