أَبُثَينَO Buthayn إِنَّكِindeed you قَدalready مَلِكتِyou have gained mastery فَأَسجِحيso be gentle
وَخُذيand take بِحَظِّكِyour share مِنfrom كَريمٍa generous one واصِلِfaithful in love
O Buthayn, you have gained mastery; be gentle.
And take your share from a generous, devoted lover.
فَلَرُبَّfor many a عارِضَةٍwoman offering عَلَيناto us وَصلَهاher love
بِالجِدِّin earnest تَخلِطُهُshe mingles it بِقَولِwith the words of الهازِلِa jester
For many a woman has offered us her love,
In earnest, mingling it with a jester's words.
فَأَجَبتُهاso I answered her بِالرِفقِwith gentleness بَعدَafter تَسَتُّرٍreserve
حُبّيmy love بُثَينَةَButhayna عَنfrom وِصالِكِunion with you شاغِليkeeps me occupied
So I answered her gently, after holding back:
'My love for Buthayna keeps me from union with you.
لَوif أَنَّthat فيin قَلبيmy heart كَقَدرِequal to the size of قُلامَةٍa nail-paring
فَضلاًroom to spare وَصَلتُكِI would join you أَوor أَتَتكِwould reach you رَسائِليmy letters
If my heart had so much as a nail-paring's worth
Of room to spare, I would join you, or my letters would reach you.'
وَيَقُلنَand they say إِنَّكَindeed you قَدalready رَضيتَyou have been content بِباطِلٍwith falsehood
مِنهاfrom her فَهَلso is there لَكَfor you فيin اِعتِزالِabandoning الباطِلِfalsehood
And they say, 'You have been content with falsehood
From her; will you not turn away from falsehood?'
وَلَباطِلٌyet surely falsehood مِمَّنfrom someone أُحِبُّI love حَديثَهُhis speech
أَشهىmore pleasing إِلَيَّto me مِنَthan البَغيضِthe detested one الباذِلِwho gives freely
Yet falsehood from one whose words I love
Is sweeter to me than a generous one I loathe.
لِيُزِلنَso they may remove عَنكِfrom you هَوايَmy passion ثُمَّthen يَصِلنَنيthey may join with me
وَإِذاand when هَويتُI love فَماthen not هَوايَmy love بِزائِلِfading
They seek to turn my love from you, then join with me;
But once I love, my love does not fade.
صادَتcaptured فُؤاديmy heart ياO بُثَينَButhayn حِبالُكُمyour snares
يَومَon the day of الحَجونِal-Hajun وَأَخطَأَتكِand missed you حَبائِليmy snares
Your snares caught my heart, O Buthayn,
On the day at al-Hajun, while my snares missed you.
مَنَّيتِنيyou raised my hopes فَلَوَيتِthen you deferred ماwhat مَنَّيتِنيyou made me hope for
وَجَعَلتِand you made عاجِلَthe immediate part of ماwhat وَعَدتِyou promised كَآجِلِlike something deferred
You raised my hopes, then deferred what you made me hope for,
And made your promise of 'soon' no different from 'later'.
وَتَثاقَلَتand she grew reluctant لَمّاwhen رَأَتshe saw كَلَفيmy infatuation بِهاwith her
أَحبِبhow dear إِلَيَّto me بِذاكَthat one مِنas a مُتَثاقِلِreluctant one
And she grew reluctant when she saw my infatuation with her;
How dear to me is that reluctant one!
وَأَطِعتِand you obeyed فيَّconcerning me عَواذِلاًreproachful women فَهَجَرتِنيso you forsook me
وَعَصَيتُand I defied فيكِconcerning you وَقَدthough indeed جَهَدنَthey strove hard عَواذِليmy reproachers
And you heeded your reproachers over me and forsook me,
While I defied my reproachers over you, though they strove hard.
حاوَلنَنيthey pressed me لِأَبُتَّso I would sever حَبلَthe cord of وِصالِكُمyour union
مِنّيfrom me وَلَستُand I am not وَإِنeven if جَهَدنَthey strive hard بِفاعِلِgoing to do so
They pressed me to sever the cord binding you
To me; but I will not, however hard they strive.
فَرَدَدتُهُنَّso I turned them back وَقَدthough indeed سَعَينَthey strove بِهَجرِكُمfor abandoning you
لَمّاwhen سَعَينَthey strove لَهُfor it بِأَفوَقَwith a broken-nocked arrow ناصِلِheadless
So I turned them back, though they strove to make me forsake you,
With a broken-nocked, headless arrow, when they strove for that.
يَعضَضنَthey bite مِنout of غَيظٍrage عَلَيَّat me أَنامِلاًfingertips
وَوَدِدتُand I wished لَوthat يَعضَضنَthey would bite صُمَّsolid جَنادِلِboulders
They bite their fingertips in fury at me,
And I wished they would bite solid boulders.
وَيَقُلنَand they say إِنَّكِindeed you ياO بُثَينَButhayn بَخيلَةٌmiserly
نَفسيmy soul فِداؤُكِyour ransom مِنas a ضَنينٍwithholding one باخِلِmiserly
And they say, 'You are miserly, O Buthayn.'
My soul be your ransom, withholding, miserly one!
