أَتَعجَبُdo you marvel? أَنthat طَرِبتُI was stirred لِصَوتِby the voice of حادِa camel-driver
أَتَعجَبُ أَن طَرِبتُ لِصَوتِ حادِ
حَداhe urged on with song بُزلاًfull-grown camels يَسِرنَthey walk بِبَطنِalong the floor of وادِa valley
حَدا بُزلاً يَسِرنَ بِبَطنِ وادِ
Do you marvel that I was stirred by a camel-driver’s voice,
Do you wonder that I was moved by the voice of a camel driver,
who sang to full-grown camels walking along a valley’s floor?
Singing slowly as he rode along the valley?
فَلاso do not تَعجَبmarvel فَإِنَّfor indeed الحُبَّlove أَمسىhas come to be
فَلا تَعجَب فَإِنَّ الحُبَّ أَمسى
لِبَثنَةَfor Bathna فيin السَوادِthe dark core مِنَof الفُؤادِthe heart
لِبَثنَةَ في السَوادِ مِنَ الفُؤادِ
So do not marvel, for love now dwells—
So do not wonder, for love has come to dwell
for Bathna—in the dark core of my heart.
In the heart of a maiden in the black tent.
