I tried to grasp the secret of Egypt and her Nile.

I was bewildered about my undertaking, and my guide lost his way.

If I am away from her, she does not leave my heart,

Until I return to the banks of the Nile.

Then, when I arrive, I cannot resist her spell,

And my four limbs fall prostrate out of reverence.

I compared Egypt with others, and she grew coy,

And I failed to find an equal for her.

What is the secret, Egypt? Who but you is there for me when I stumble?

Is there a way to quench my burning thirst?

Yours is the proud defiance of the lofty, reaching toward the heights,

In every field, borne out by evidence.

    عَقِمَ الزَّمَانُ بِمِثْلِهَا كَبَدِيْلِ

    This civilization is a host of miracles among humankind;

Time has proved barren of an equal to take its place.

God raised her station and exalted it,

In the Qur'an, the Torah, and the Gospel.

They brought Joseph from the depths of darkness

To the land of al-Aziz, where he became the finest guest.

Who but you, Egypt, in hard times provided for

The household of prophethood through noble giving?

And the Nile follows the revealed command of the Maker of its drops,

Like the birds at the divine command, in the Year of the Elephant.

It bends tenderly over a child, who then sleeps in his cradle.

So how often has your Nile lent a hand in kindness!

On Mount Sinai, our Lord manifested Himself,

Above the one He spoke to, with the first revelation.

And likewise the Virgin came to Egypt with her son,

Seeking safety and taking refuge in a resting place.

Hagar is enough for you, O land of the Quiver.

Sway with pride, O Quiver, sway!

    مَنْ عَقَّ مِصْرَ فَقَدْ أَتَىَ بِجَلِيْلِ

    O mother of Ishmael, maintaining ties with you is a duty;

Whoever dishonors Egypt has committed a grave wrong.

In your soil rest the finest of a Messenger's kin:

A fragrance that wafts, and a balm for the ailing.

This is the Almighty's care, bestowed especially upon

Egypt, so that she may remain the place of special favor.

Blessed are you, Egypt; I do not see myself doing justice

To the praise you deserve, however hard I strive along my path!

I wished to speak at length, and my excuse is that I

Extinguished my wick when your radiance appeared!

For you are the light, and no brightness remains if it withdraws

From us—your radiance, O bride of the Nile.

O Egypt, may God guard you as He guarded

His revelation from tamperers and intruders!
