We prostrated ourselves before the apes, hoping for worldly fortune—
We prostrated ourselves before the monkeys, hoping for worldly gain
which the apes’ hands held, withholding it from us.
Which the monkeys’ hands held, to our exclusion.

But our fingers returned with nothing of worth
So our fingertips returned with nothing
that we had hoped for, save the humiliation of prostration.
We had hoped for, save the humiliation of prostration.
