أُذكُرremember مُنادَمَتيmy companionship over wine وَالخَبزُand the bread خشكارُcoarse bran bread
Say to the vizier—may God prolong his power—
Tell the minister whose reign God prolong
Recall drinking with me, when the bread was coarse,
I reminisce our chat though bread be hard
إِذwhen لَيسَthere was no بِالبابِat the door برذونٌriding horse لِنَوبَتِكُمfor your turn of duty
وَلاnor غُلامٌservant boy وَلاnor بِالبابِat the door طَيّارُswift riverboat
When no riding horse stood at the door for your turn of duty,
Since at the door there is no cloak for your shift
Nor a servant boy, nor a swift riverboat at the door.
Nor servant, nor by the door a flier
