Praise be to God, I have no secretary,

nor a doorkeeper at the door of my home,

nor a donkey that, should I decide to

ride it, would prompt the words, "Jahza is riding."

Nor a shirt to serve me as a spare,

for fear my own shirt may be lost.

    And the house rent—it ulcerates

my eyelids with a streaming downpour.

If a friend visits me, I resolve to

sell a book to satisfy the friend's hunger.

I find myself among a company whose gloating

is a duty from God, binding and obligatory.

Among them is a friend whose wife is a wonder,

astonishing when you ponder her condition.

You would take her for a freeborn woman, yet her hoof

is thinner than the verse of Khalid al-Katib.
