بِأَبي الزائِرُ الَّذي

زارَ بَعدَ اِنقِطاعِهِ

By my father, who's absence

visited after his absence.

Had endured too long, returned

كَشَفَ البَدرَ لِلوَرى

كَشَفَ البَدرَ لِلوَرى

كَشفَهُ عَن قِناعِهِ

كَشفَهُ عَن قِناعِهِ

He revealed the full moon to humankind

As the moon unveils its face

by lifting his veil.

From behind its veil.

لَم أَزَل طولَ لَيلَتي

لَم أَزَل طولَ لَيلَتي

ساهِراً في اِنخِداعِهِ

ساهِراً في اِنخِداعِهِ

I remained throughout my night

All night long I stayed awake

awake, seeking to beguile him.

Deceived in hoping for his return.

كَلَّما رُمتُ وَصلَهُ

كَلَّما رُمتُ وَصلَهُ

زادَني في اِمتِناعِهِ

زادَني في اِمتِناعِهِ

Whenever I sought union with him,

Each time I tried to bid him stay

he met me with still greater refusal.

He slipped further from my grasp.

ثُمَّ وَلّى مودِّعاً

ثُمَّ وَلّى مودِّعاً

حَزني مِن وداعِهِ

حَزني مِن وداعِهِ

Then he turned away, bidding farewell;

Then he turned to leave again

my sorrow arose from his farewell.

Adding to my sorrow.
