جانَبتُI shunned أَطيَبَthe sweetest لِذَّتيmy pleasure وَشَرابيand my drink
وَهَجَرتُand I abandoned بَعدَكَafter you عامِداًdeliberately أَصحابيmy companions
I have forsaken my sweetest pleasure and my drink,
I have abandoned the sweetest of my joys and drink
And after you, I deliberately abandoned my companions.
And after you left, willingly, my friends too
فَإِذاso when كَتَبتُI write لِكَيso that أُنَزِّهَI may delight ناظِريmy eyes
فيin حُسنِthe beauty of لَفظِكَyour words لَمnot تَجُدyou grant بِجَوابِwith a reply
So when I write to delight my eyes
So if I wrote to glorify my watcher’s eyes
In the beauty of your words, you grant no reply.
With the beauty of your words, I’d find no answer
إِنif كُنتَyou are تُنكِرُyou deny ذِلَّتيmy humiliation وَتَذّلُّليand my self-abasement
وَنُحولَand the wasting of جِسميmy body وَاِمتِدادَand the prolongation of عَذابيmy torment
If you deny my humiliation and my self-abasement,
If you deny my humiliation and fawning
And my body's wasting and the length of my torment,
And the wasting of my body and prolonging of my torment
فَاِنظُرthen look إِلىat بَدَنيmy body الَّذيwhich موَّهتُهُI have disguised it
لِلنّاظِرينَto onlookers بِكَثرَةِwith a multitude of الأَثوابِthe garments
Then look at my body, which I have disguised
Then look upon this body I have clothed
With many garments in the eyes of onlookers.
To the viewers, in many robes
