I called to ʿAmr, tipped to one side

by wine that had seized him, head and foot:

“The two monks’ fire has shone forth in the monastery, and already

their two bells have called you at dawn—so rise!”

So he rose, stumbling in the robes of his drowsiness,

to draw clear wine, like a star in the darkness.

Then he drew it forth and sang, the cup in his hand:

“Greet Salmā’s dwelling-place at Dhū Salam.”

If a friend and aged wine remained mine among humankind,

I would care neither for close kin nor for ties of blood,

nor go early to a gracious man for his bounty,

nor pay heed to any blessings.
