لاdo not تُصغِlisten لِلَّومَto reproach إِنَّindeed اللَومَreproach تَضليلُmisguidance
لا تُصغِ لِلَّومَ إِنَّ اللَومَ تَضليلُ
وَاِشرَبand drink فَفيfor in الشُربِdrinking لِلأَحزانِfor sorrows تَحليلُdissolution
وَاِشرَب فَفي الشُربِ لِلأَحزانِ تَحليلُ
Do not heed reproach, for reproach leads astray.
And drink, for drinking dissolves sorrows.
فَقَدfor indeed مَضىhas passed القَيظُthe summer heat وَاحتُثَّتand were urged onward رَواحِلُهُits mounts
فَقَد مَضى القَيظُ وَاحتُثَّت رَواحِلُهُ
وَطابَتِand grew pleasant الراحُwine لمّاwhen آلَcame round أَيلولُSeptember
وَطابَتِ الراحُ لمّا آلَ أَيلولُ
For summer's heat has passed, and its mounts were urged onward.
And wine grew pleasant when September came round.
لَمdid not يَبقَremain فيin الأَرضِthe earth نَبتٌa plant يَشتَكيcomplain of مَرَهاًlack of kohl
لَم يَبقَ في الأَرضِ نَبتٌ يَشتَكي مَرَهاً
إِلّاexcept وَناظِرُهُand its eye بِالطَلِّwith dew مَكحولُlined with kohl
إِلّا وَناظِرُهُ بِالطَلِّ مَكحولُ
No plant remained on earth complaining of a lack of kohl,
But its eye was lined with dew.
