وَليand I have صاحِبٌa friend لاnot قَدَّسَsanctify اللَهُGod روحَهُhis soul
وَلي صاحِبٌ لا قَدَّسَ اللَهُ روحَهُ
وَكانَand he was مِنَfrom الخَيراتِgoodness غَيرَnot قَريبِnear
وَكانَ مِنَ الخَيراتِ غَيرَ قَريبِ
And I have a friend—may God never bless his soul—
I had a friend, may God sanctify his soul
And he was far removed from goodness.
Who was generous and kind
أَكَلتُI ate عَصيراًin the afternoon عِندَهُat his house فيin مَضيرَةٍa sour-milk stew
أَكَلتُ عَصيراً عِندَهُ في مَضيرَةٍ
فَياso, oh لَكَfor you مِنof يَومٍa day عَلَيَّfor me عَصيبِharrowing
فَيا لَكَ مِن يَومٍ عَلَيَّ عَصيبِ
One afternoon I ate sour-milk stew at his house;
I dined with him once in misery
So, what a harrowing day it was for me!
Oh what a difficult day that was for me
