وَخِلٍّand a friend وَدودٍloving دَعانيinvited me وَقَدand already
وَخِلٍّ وَدودٍ دَعاني وَقَد
تَوَهَّمَimagined أَنِّيَthat I خِلٌّa friend وَدودُloving
تَوَهَّمَ أَنِّيَ خِلٌّ وَدودُ
And a loving friend invited me, having
Imagined that I was a loving friend.
أَبَحتُI violated حَريمَthe sanctity of فَراريجِهِhis young chickens
أَبَحتُ حَريمَ فَراريجِهِ
وَكانَتand they were حِمىًinviolate أَنthat تُمَسَّbe touched الجُلودُthe skins
وَكانَت حِمىً أَن تُمَسَّ الجُلودُ
I violated the sanctity of his young chickens,
Though they were inviolate, their skins not to be touched.
وَدونَand in defense of الرِقابِthe necks تُدَقُّare broken الرِقابُthe necks
وَدونَ الرِقابِ تُدَقُّ الرِقابُ
وَدونَand in defense of الكُبودِthe livers تُرَضُّare crushed الكُبودُthe livers
وَدونَ الكُبودِ تُرَضُّ الكُبودُ
And to defend their necks, necks are broken;
And to defend their livers, livers are crushed.
فَقالَthen he said وَصَعِّدَand he heaved أَنفاسَهُhis sighs
فَقالَ وَصَعِّدَ أَنفاسَهُ
نَعَمyes هكَذاthus تُستَثارُare stirred up الحُقودُthe grudges
نَعَم هكَذا تُستَثارُ الحُقودُ
Then he said, with heaving sighs,
'Yes, this is how grudges are stirred up.'
فَقُلتُso I said وَقَدand already كانَhad happened ماwhat كانَhad happened لاnot
فَقُلتُ وَقَد كانَ ما كانَ لا
أَعودُI return فَقالَthen he said أَناI لاnot أَعودُI do it again
أَعودُ فَقالَ أَنا لا أَعودُ
So I said, after what had happened, 'I won't
Return.' He said, 'I won't do it again either.'
