I keep vigil with the horizon’s star until it pales.

Then, if it dozes off, weary-eyed and enfeebled,

and the eyes of spiteful foes sleep upon the blaze,

and night’s silence closes in, and the troubling thought withdraws,

and only two remain awake amid weariness:

my wishes and a reckless one they summoned from sorrow.

I journey through your eyes, seeking to discern hopes,

and what has eluded me in life, and what has drawn near.

So I keep all my pains far from your eyes,

jealously protective of your vision, fertile to its core.

I pillow my eyelids on the arm of a tale,

and sketch a life to be built within your expanse.

And I ask God’s sun to cast, with its warmth,

a fence around the children if a storm draws near.

So, Lord, if time grows feverish with wrath,

and inflames the breasts of the “grown-ups” and brings affliction,

Osama! My Lord, shelter him from hardship,

and from grim faces, sickness, and wasting illness.

And make cheerfulness flourish for him in every face,

and in every breast a home—a home held dear.

And, Lord, the children of the Arab world and all humankind—

grant them the thirst-quenching draught of love, safety, and hope.

And spare them, Lord, the rule of an oppressor,

treacherous, loathsome, addicted to injustice—addicted indeed.

And keep the love of homelands ablaze within them,

deep-rooted, and the legacy of giving firmly established.

And bless the Arab lands, Lord, for they are

thirsty for bliss, for love and hope.

And turn people’s coldness, Lord, into fellowship,

and turn the universe’s wastelands into bread and irises.
