وأورق في فمي منها نشيدُ
And O woman, what befell her has befallen me.
And O woman who stripped me bare
And from her a song put forth leaves in my mouth.
And whose song blossomed in my mouth

وأزهر في العشايا طيف وعدٍ

يناجيه، ويكلؤه القصيد
And in the evenings the phantom of a promise blossomed.
And whose promise flowered in our nights
Poetry whispers to it and watches over it.
That caresses and completes my poem

إذاif لمnot يقْفُfollows وجهكyour face، ماwhat تريدyou desire
إذا لم يقْفُ وجهك، ما تريد
The songs of the watercourses stray in their steps
You remain a line, songs of the water-bearers
If what you desire does not follow your face.
If your face does not stop, as you wish

مرايانا وتُغتال الوعود
And the roads are cut off if they lose
And paths blossom when they lose
Our mirrors, and promises are slain.
Our mirrors and promises are assassinated

If time sobs, it is from our sorrow,
If time sighs, so our sorrows
And if it sings, we are the song within it.
And if it sings, we are its song
