You stepped into my heart, O bewitching one,

And left me with a head that spins.

So when I follow you, my steps trail behind

My heart; I do not turn back.

Has it been said that humankind lived without

    Hearts within their breasts?

You sent my mind flying, so it might return

To me with my heart, O treacherous one.

So you set it down beside you, as it imagines

Sweet, cool refreshment in the scorching heat.

Then it sees in your water the image of the heart,

Fettered like a camel for slaughter.

So tomorrow, like one snatching at its shadow—

And water is the mirror of birds—

Absent-minded from the vastness of love,

Sorrowful over a beloved who acts unjustly,

It will live, yet catch no prey,

    Nor repent of the seas.
