When, from eternity’s ʿarār flowers, O [unclear ending]?

And my soul is among the spirits encircling the Throne.

For my soul now chafes at the cage in which

It has lamented prison’s harshness, whether I stay or walk.

It is the worn-out body, and though it is a jailer,

We shall leave it—that decayed remnant—on the bier.

So, Lord, beneath the Throne, in the paradise of Your favor,

You will see me among the righteous, making myself a bed.

There, where the soul moves in rapture,

And within its broken breast it sings aloud in the nest.

And from its clustered banana trees come my sustenance and my strength.

And from its frequented pool I am given drink and breathe in fragrance.

And from its promised bounty come fair-eyed maidens as companions,

Pleasure: whenever I seek it, I find for myself [unclear word].

And in its outspread shade are radiant, blessed ones,

Who in this world were among the disheveled and dusky.

It would be an unknown world, had You not described it.

Within it are couches with bedding woven in patterns.

For my soul has wearied of this world and spurned its pleasures.

And was it anything but deception and folly?

If we appraise it and take in its pleasures,

Then there is nothing but clothing, water, and bread.

So light my path to guidance, and watch over me.

And do not leave me groping blindly along its paths.

Blessed are You, O Provider for jinn and humankind,

And O Guarantor of sustenance for birds and wild beasts.

And indeed, a glimpse of pardon and favor is enough for me,

Even if I lived in this world on salt, clad in sackcloth.
