The eastern horizon glowed after a spell of darkness

Of night now past; no evening companions had called on me.

Between me and the sun, which was about to appear to me,

A cloudbank appeared, lying still on the horizon as a veil.

Then, after rising, the sun stretched toward it

Its rays, and the sights filled me with wonder.

I saw a marvel of the Almighty's workmanship:

    Mountains of crystal, with fire behind them;

Or else a river of night's blood—the night struck down,

    Slaughtered by dawn's spearpoint, which vengeance had stained;

Or molten gold added to quicksilver,

When rivers flowed from the melting of those two substances.

Parallel to it runs a dust-gray strip upon the earth,

Of verdant crops, at which the mind is bewildered.

And a strip of silver—the Nile flowing—

While the house above its bank took pride in me.

So I beheld a tableau whose design astounds the mind,

And an all-subduing Lord, to whom dominion belongs, fashioned it.

And the sun's disc unleashed, from its Lord's light,

A ray that effaced my tableau—can lights efface it?

It is the wandering star; its horn has risen

Over the world, and clouds and the last hours of night withdrew.

I bore witness that God perfects His handiwork,

And that many among creation are unbelievers.

For my certainty is, in truth, my solace

And the strength of my faith, even if the neighbor forsakes me.

I have disowned those astray in a wilderness of ignorance,

While around me lights gleam, and mysteries.
