  1. هبني خدعت بما قد تام عشاقي

    ترارتي عملت فيهم وأشراقي

    Suppose I was deceived by what had already enthralled my lovers.

    My youthful freshness worked upon them, as did my radiance.

  2. وكنت أقربهم مني وأثرهم

    فاحتل حبك مثواه بأعماقي

    You were the closest of them to me, and the most affecting,

    so your love took up its dwelling in my depths.

  3. وقد تخيلتك المرجو في زمني

    فكدت أخرج من حرصي لإطلاقي

    I had imagined you the one hoped for in my time,

    and nearly cast off my caution to set myself free.

  4. حدثت بالسحر سيالا بعاطفتي

    وزرت كالنجم ألا لا بآفاقي

    You spoke with enchantment, flowing through my feelings,

    and visited like a star—behold, no!—across my horizons.

  5. بذلت نزراً وما قدرت بذلته

    لمستخف بأعراق وأخلاق

    I gave a little, and whatever I could, I gave

    to one who made light of lineage and morals.

  6. والمرء يبذل بعض الشيء تهيئة

    لنية الخير لم يحفل بإخفاق

    A person gives part of a thing as preparation

    for an intention of good, heedless of failure.

  7. فما على إذا ما كنت صادقه

    وكنت يا خادعي من شر أرزاقي

    No blame is mine if I was sincere,

    while you, my deceiver, were among the worst of my fortunes.

  8. وللشباب نداء قر في أذني

    وللطبيعة داء مج ترياقي

    Youth had a call that settled in my ear,

    and nature a malady that spat out my antidote.

  9. كذبتني الحب فاحمد ما أخذت به

    والحمد لله أن فوتك الباقي

    You lied to me of love; be thankful for what you gained through it,

    and praise be to God that the rest escaped you.

  10. فخنتني ونقضت العهد معتمدا

    على النهانه في تهويل مصلاق

    You betrayed me and broke the covenant, relying

    on weak-mindedness before the bluster of a glib tongue.

  11. وضاع خالي في الآمال أدركها

    على يديك وعيش معك غيداق

    My fancy was lost in hopes I might attain

    at your hands, and in a life of abundance with you.

  12. أين الكؤوس التي سقيتني سرفاً

    من الوعود وأين الظرف يا ساقي

    Where are the cups from which you made me drink so lavishly

    of promises, and where is the grace, cupbearer?

  13. يا ساقي السم عرضاته أجئت بما

    وقيت عرضك أن يعتر يا واقي

    O pourer of poison to those exposed to it, have you brought what

    you used to guard your honor against attack, O guardian,

  14. على الذي يتعاطى الحذق يختله

    من حيث يجهل قوم غير حذاق

    against one who lays claim to cleverness? It catches him

    where he is ignorant, through people with no skill.

  15. قد باعد اللَه فيما بيننا وخلا

    عهد تعهد لو لم أنج إحراقي

    God has now put distance between us, and gone is

    a covenant once pledged; had I not escaped, it would have burned me.

  16. فما لك اليوم والرجعى إلى ومن

    آثار غدرك بي دمع بآماقي

    What business have you today returning to me, when among

    the traces of your treachery toward me are tears in my eyes?

  17. ترجو الضيافة ما جازت لذي أشر

    له السوابق في القمراء سراق

    You hope for hospitality? It is not granted to one of insolence

    with a record among thieves under moonlight.

  18. عدلا طعمت حلالاً طيباً فلقد

    كفأت قدرى وقد كسرت أطباقي

    In fairness, you ate food lawful and wholesome; indeed,

    you overturned my pot and smashed my plates.

  19. إن البصيرة عين القلب إن خفيت

    على العيون بلاوي العاشق الراق

    Insight is the eye of the heart, if hidden

    from outward eyes are the afflictions of the refined lover.

  20. قد كنت حبرت أوراقي عليك مني

    أظن أنك عندي خير أعلاقي

    I had adorned my pages with words about you, from my own hand,

    thinking you, in my eyes, the finest of my treasures.

  21. أما وقد خاب ظني فيك خيبته

    فقد قلبت دواتي فوق أوراقي

    But now my opinion of you has failed—you made it fail—

    so I have overturned my inkpot over my pages.

  22. قلب كقلب دواتي سوف تكشفه الأيام

    لا السحر يخفيه ولا الراقي

    A heart—like the overturning of my inkpot—the days will expose;

    no magic will conceal it, nor any spell-reciter.
