O you who occupy your mind with hoarding merchandise,

O troubled one, hoarding wares

To sell it at exorbitant prices:

To sell at outrageous prices -

ربحٌ قليل في الكثير مبارك

ربحٌ قليل في الكثير مبارك

والرزق موكولٌ إلى الديان

والرزق موكولٌ إلى الديان

A small profit on a large quantity is blessed,

Little profit blessedly gained

And sustenance is entrusted to the Divine Judge.

Is livelihood left to the Judge.

وخسارة محمولةٌ في مرة

وخسارة محمولةٌ في مرة

يأتي لها عوض بدور ثان

يأتي لها عوض بدور ثان

And a loss borne on one occasion

And loss once borne

Finds compensation in a second round.

Will be compensated another time.

ولرب شيء للغلاء خزنته

ولرب شيء للغلاء خزنته

ما بعت منه بأجرةِ الوزانِ

ما بعت منه بأجرةِ الوزانِ

And many a thing you hoarded for a rise in price

And many goods hoarded for high prices

You did not sell any of it for even the weigher's fee.

Remain unsold, unweighed.

كم تاجر يشكو الكساد وانما

كم تاجر يشكو الكساد وانما

سببُ الفساد مخافةُ الخسران

سببُ الفساد مخافةُ الخسران

How many a merchant complains of slack trade, though

How many a merchant complains of recession!

The cause of ruin is fear of loss alone.

Yet the cause of corruption is fear of loss.

قد يطمع المنهوم يجمع يومه

قد يطمع المنهوم يجمع يومه

ولربما يمسي على الحرمان

ولربما يمسي على الحرمان

The insatiable may covet gain, gathering all day,

The desperate collector may hope to gather his day’s due -

Yet he may reach evening deprived.

Yet by nightfall remain deprived.
