O voice of poetry, pass me by

For a day, that I may put my affairs in order.

You kept me company through the years, until

    You filled me with conceit.

So you passed the mast with it,

And you two toured the palaces.

And you two visited every nation,

In its homes and frontier towns.

And you said, “Describe them in verse.”

Yet what are my lines beside them?

For how much scope it has

    In beauty behind the veils!

In the wake of youth in bloom.

Nothing remains but to seize what is left

    In a short lifetime.

For God has a claim upon me:

The matter of the arduous reckoning.

With tricks you took my mind,

And you two set off on your travels.

You two sowed the earth with your steps,

And you two roamed the seas.

And you two returned with tragedies

Among the people of the world of depravity.

You made my reed pen flow from me,

    Once, with truth and falsehood.

And how many a devotee it has,

Who was loyal to it amid the women's chambers!

O voice of poetry, pass me by.

You distracted me from my destiny.

I would fulfill it with my good reward

    From the Gentle, the All-Aware.

Has my collapse not been enough for you,

    And my lying in bed?
