لقد دهمت أخوتنا الشرورُ

My brother in faith and in the homeland we would give our lives for,

Evils have indeed assailed our brotherhood.

فقلبت السياسة كل قلب

وبتنا تستبد بنا الأمور

So politics has turned every heart upside down,

Turning every heart's politics upside down,

And we have come to be tyrannized by events.

As our affairs are seized by tyranny.

تريد حكومةً وأريد أخرى

تريد حكومةً وأريد أخرى

ترى هل نابنا خطل وزور

ترى هل نابنا خطل وزور

You want one government, and I want another;

One wants this government, another wants that,

Do you think folly and falsehood have befallen us?

Do you think we've been struck by folly and fraud?

قد انتفع الدخيل بكل خلف

فحتام التخالف والغرور

فحتام التخالف والغرور

The intruder has indeed profited from every rift;

The foreigner has benefited from every difference,

So how long will discord and delusion last?

So separation and arrogance were inevitable.

سكرنا لا نفيق فضاع وادٍ

We grew drunk and do not sober up; so a valley was lost—

We were intoxicated, never waking, so a valley was lost,

Which we inherited, as the written lines attest.

لنا من جنة الدنيا سماء

وللغير المسارح والثغور

Of this world's paradise, the sky is ours,

For us the heavens of this life,

And others have the pastures and ports.

For others the theaters and breaches.

لنا في ملكنا الأكواخ سكنى

لنا في ملكنا الأكواخ سكنى

وللغير المعاقل والقصور

وللغير المعاقل والقصور

In our own domain, huts are our dwellings,

For us in our kingdom, huts to dwell in,

And others have the strongholds and palaces.

For others, the fortresses and palaces.

ومن طلب العزيز أعد ضخماً

ومن طلب العزيز أعد ضخماً

وتختلف العرائس والمهور

وتختلف العرائس والمهور

And whoever seeks what is precious makes ample provision;

And he who seeks the precious deems himself huge,

And brides and dowries differ.

As brides and dowries differ.

وما لم نبن بيتا للمعالي

وما لم نبن بيتا للمعالي

فسيان المساكن والقبور

فسيان المساكن والقبور

And unless we build a house for greatness,

If we haven't built a house for glories,

Then dwellings and graves are alike.

Tombs and homes are equal.

وما لم نحم في الجلى حمانا

وما لم نحم في الجلى حمانا

فأين بربك الشعب الغيور

فأين بربك الشعب الغيور

And unless we defend our homeland in the gravest crisis,

If we haven't protected with zeal,

Then where, by your Lord, are the people zealous for their honor?

Where is your zealous people, by your Lord?
