If the soul came into this world from our past,

Or from a realm before humankind's world that harbors it,

Then how can souls fail to recall a former state

From the realm of primordial particles, shedding light on their past?

Has this soul, since the beginning, had no

Intellect, while intellect holds a secret unlike what is in the soul?

Or is it negative, with intellect coming as its positive counterpart,

And from the two arose an awareness that kindles it?

Or is the child born with an unknowing soul within him,

And intellect arises gradually, then gives it knowledge?

Say, then: perhaps it was rational before,

And perhaps He who created forgetfulness makes it forget,

For a wise purpose: to see the world and be delighted by it,

Because recalling its past would grieve it.

So this soul is among the mysteries of its Creator,

And out of mercy for God's servants, He conceals it.

If the soul recalled the pleasures it had lost,

Earth's pleasures would no longer satisfy it.

    سيخبرُ الموتُ بالأسرار يبديها

    So let us set inquiry into souls aside;

Death will tell of the secrets and reveal them.

How many secrets lie in nature, revealed

By our days and nights as they follow one another!

Our forefathers did not know them, and passed on,

Not knowing many of its aspects.

We are upon the earth, yet do not know its depths,

Or what it conceals, while we live along its fringes.

Then how could we know the essence of a sky we cannot reach?

And how could we know the essence of stars among its radiant lights?

Who is it that taught the chick, from a tender age,

To peck at grain, or gave it guidance?

Who taught the chicks to lift their heads?

Was it not by raising their heads that He gave them drink?

Who taught the bees construction and engineering,

And the ants to gather food for the season, to keep them safe?

Who split the earth to bring forth plants and flowers,

And sent down rain in due measure to water it?

Who provides for the birds swimming through the skies?

Who guarantees sustenance to the young livestock in their deserts?

Who is it that made a person, in a dream,

Hear the apparition recount the news?

And who, and who—His favors have watched over us.

Glory be to Him! These words cannot count them all.
