إن كافأ الناس ناساً عن مآثرهم

If people reward others for their noble deeds,

If people reward others for their deeds

While they're alive, the reward is sweet,

طاب الجزاءُ وهم في الكون أحياءُ

طاب الجزاءُ وهم في الكون أحياءُ

the reward is sweet while they are alive in the world.

Praising the dead in their tombs is useless,

For after them, praise is for names only.

لا ينفع المدح موتى في مقابرهم

لا ينفع المدح موتى في مقابرهم

Praise does not benefit the dead in their graves;

Can letters disdain praising a dead man's name?

In it there is still his soul's beauty and light.

فبعدهم يتلقى المدح أسماء

فبعدهم يتلقى المدح أسماء

for after they are gone, names receive the praise.

Do you appreciate your fathers while they live,

Or do you dishonor them, ungrateful and blind?

هل يرفض الحرف عجبا في اسم ميته

هل يرفض الحرف عجبا في اسم ميته

Does a letter in its dead bearer's name refuse out of pride?

Do you appreciate mere letters with no life,

While the owner is without a "B" or "Y"?

أوفيه من روحه حسن وأضواءُ

أوفيه من روحه حسن وأضواءُ

Or is there beauty and radiance from his spirit within it?

So appreciate and speak well of the living today,

That your children may benefit from your words.

أتقدرون الفتى أباؤكم غفلوا

أتقدرون الفتى أباؤكم غفلوا

Do you honor the young man? Your fathers were heedless

Statues honor the dead who lie in the ground,

While their knowledge benefits only the living.

عن قدره وهو فيهم ذاك إخزاء

عن قدره وهو فيهم ذاك إخزاء

of his worth while he was among them—that is disgrace.

The dead need no food or water from the living,

So do not neglect the living, tending the dead.

أتقدرون حروفاً لا حياة بها

أتقدرون حروفاً لا حياة بها

Do you honor letters that have no life in them,

وصاحب القدر لا باءُ ولا ياءُ

وصاحب القدر لا باءُ ولا ياءُ

while the person of worth is neither a bāʾ nor a yāʾ?

حيا إذن كرموه واذكروه غدا

حيا إذن كرموه واذكروه غدا

Then honor him while alive, and remember him tomorrow,

فينتفع بجميل الذكر أبناءُ

فينتفع بجميل الذكر أبناءُ

so that children may benefit from fine remembrance.

يا للتماثيل للموتى تكرمهم

يا للتماثيل للموتى تكرمهم

Oh, the statues for the dead! You honor them

من حولها وهمو في الأرض أشلاءُ

من حولها وهمو في الأرض أشلاءُ

from around the statues, while they lie as bodily fragments in the earth.

علومهم تنفع الأحياء وحدهمو

علومهم تنفع الأحياء وحدهمو

Their knowledge benefits the living alone,

ومالهم بميتهم عيش ولا ماءُ

ومالهم بميتهم عيش ولا ماءُ

and with their dead they have neither sustenance nor water.
