    I once was at the prince’s shoulder and in his shade,

    And Time had not taken aim at my path,

    Until I went far away; then the fates took their toll on

    My safety, as though I were a heretic’s Qur’an.

    تذرى محبته بألف صديق

    And I was bereaved of my son, who had been beside me;

    His love put a thousand friends to shame.

    Had I known that in my departure lay harm

    That destroyed my hopes and brought distress,

    I would have lived at the prince’s gate, delighting

    My eyes with the countenance of Yusuf the Truthful.
