I crept along on my cane, as though from it
I leaned on my staff as though it struck
the voice of warning were tapping upon the earth.
The ground with the voice of the warner.

أهابُI fear الخطوstepping كالرجلlike the man الضريرblind
And when I walk on three legs,
And when I walked with faltering steps
I fear each step like a blind man.
Like a blind man, I feared each step,

سواءwhether فيon السريرthe bed أوor الحصيرthe reed mat
Surely, stretching out on my bedding is more dignified for me,
So I may rest my body in my bed,
whether on a bed or a reed mat.
Be it a mattress or a rug.

I read a page and skip another;
I read a page and skip another,
it speaks to me as though Siri were with me.
As if my companion speaks to me.

I stay sheltered: no gloating from my enemy,
I feel no gloating from my foe,
nor that pity from my ally,
Nor pity from a loyal friend,

nor children keeping out of my way
Nor children shunning my path
and showing sorrow as I pass.
And wondering at my walk.
فليسfor there is nothing أذلmore humiliating للكبراءto the elders نفساًin spirit
سوىexcept أسفpity الصغيرthe young one علىfor الكبيرthe old one
For nothing so humiliates the souls of elders
For the great nothing so humiliates
as a young person's pity for the old.
As a child's pity for the aged.
