أنا للمعدم الفقير قرين

أنا للمعدم الفقير قرين

ومع السيد الثرى سواء

I am companion to the destitute poor,

I am a companion to the destitute poor man,

And equal to the lord of riches.

And an equal of the wealthy lord.

إن نفسي وأنفس الناس كل

إن نفسي وأنفس الناس كل

منه في الخلق شاعت الأضواء

منه في الخلق شاعت الأضواء

Indeed, my soul and the souls of all people—each

Indeed, my soul and the souls of others—each one

Has spread its radiance throughout creation.

Has shed its light throughout creation.

نحن لا فرق في النفوس ولكن

نحن لا فرق في النفوس ولكن

كل فرق ما بيننا الأسماء

كل فرق ما بيننا الأسماء

Among our souls there is no difference; only

We do not differ in soul, but

Names make all the difference between us.

All the difference between us lies in names.

لا أبالي مع الكفاف أكان الكوخ

لا أبالي مع الكفاف أكان الكوخ

بيتي أو أنه الحمراءُ

بيتي أو أنه الحمراءُ

So long as I have enough, I care not whether the hut

With enough to live on, I care not whether a hut

Is my home, or whether it is al-Ḥamrāʾ.

Is my home, or the Alhambra.

أي قوت يقيم نفسي غداءٌ

أي قوت يقيم نفسي غداءٌ

أي ثوب يلف جسمي كساءُ

أي ثوب يلف جسمي كساءُ

Any food that sustains my life is a meal;

Any food that sustains my life is a meal;

Any garment wrapped around my body is clothing.

Any garment that wraps my body is clothing.
