دريئة شر في البلاء تذود

دريئة شر في البلاء تذود

Behold, moral virtues in every nation are but

A shield against evil, warding it off in adversity.

وما الشرف الموروث إلا تميمةٌ

وما الشرف الموروث إلا تميمةٌ

من الوهم يتلوها الفتى فيسود

من الوهم يتلوها الفتى فيسود

And inherited honor is nothing but an amulet

Of illusion, which the young man recites and so gains eminence.
