    And the Concealer rewarded me, in the love between us,

    chaste as I was, with good repute—glory to Him who rewards.

    فما مسنا العذال بالهمز واللمز

    [Opening word unclear] the dazzling allurements of youth, out of scruple;

    so the faultfinders never touched us with sneers and taunts.

    And love became, between us, harmony and companionship,

    and a habit of intimacy, with solace in its renewal.

    So do not fear innocent union, for you

    have, without doubt, found a distinguished man.

    If human love is nothing but lust,

    then what difference is there between Adam’s son and goats?

    And for the needs of sex I have what suffices

    to spare me indecency and a reputation wounded by slurs:

    فما أبست عيشي ولا جلبت شرزي

    a chaste woman who pleases me in beauty and chastity;

    she has neither embittered my life nor brought me distress.

    Yet I have a leaning toward everything enchanting,

    whether inanimate thing or human, freed from defilement.
