Will the valiant king lend me his ear awhile,

if once I say, 'Patience,' so that I may speak?

Who will let me offer him consolation,

so I may count as a kindness what I count as presumption,

and spend the night glad that I have not left

burning grief within that great heart?

O Husayn, take refuge in patience, holding fast to it,

until you see the beautiful outcome of noble patience.

What a fine ally, lending its ally strength

in calamity, if a friend forsakes a friend.

Be calm, for fate has spared from death

no one, and weeping has availed not a whit.

Had it made exceptions, its favor would have been

reserved for you, O house of Ismail.

Though your mother has met her end, she has indeed seen

her only son's banners shade the Nile.

And she attained glories never attained before her

by the noblest of ladies in clan and tribe.

And the two eras—the two eras of her glory—were watched over

by two kings of noble stock and ancestry.

And in Egypt a procession gladdened her eyes,

from which Time's gaze recoils, exhausted.

It bears you along, while the angels around it

guard your person, circling and alighting.

Longing for you has drawn them, a longing heightened

by your acceptance of the throne and crown

out of jealous care for the house of Muhammad, lest it become

inhabited by any but his sons, the sons of glory.
