When the damp breeze blows over the roses,

I recall my verse on the rose-tinted cheek.

And if clouds rain, with lightning flashing within them,

I weep, with a flame of longing in my heart.

The watcher veils her from me, and before her stand

    Two veils—harsh estrangement and distance.

And the effect of an arrow of separation she aimed is not

Like that of a sword of rejection she unsheathed.

For many a separation comes to you from one who did not intend it,

But rejection comes only by deliberate intent.

Set aside verse describing women, and leave it be,

And hasten to string jewels in praise of Majdi.

For the wise do not equate stinginess with generosity,

Nor do the wise equate jest with earnestness.

A prince with an intellect—if you seek to describe it,

Then abandon their saying, "like a spear, an arrow, a cutting edge."

He rose high, and his excellence called me to praise,

So I strung the beads of the stars into a necklace.

O brother of glory, take it: in its travels it is like the east wind,

And in its fragrance, like the rose, the myrtle, and incense.

So may you ever be the companion of honor, pride, and generosity,

And may you ever be the peer of glory, excellence, and good fortune.
