Pour forth tears, or blood, or rhymes.
Whether shed tears, blood, or rhymes
Here are the mourning rites of the one most worthy of people's grief.
The mourners deserve the greatest grief
أَيَجمُلُis it fitting أنthat تُنعىhave their death announced الفَضائلُthe virtues لِلوَرىto mankind
وَلمand not تكُyou were فيamong الباكينَthe weepers وَيحكَwoe to you باكِياweeping
Is it fitting that virtues' death be announced to mankind,
Is it fair to eulogize the virtues to the people
While you—woe to you—are not weeping among the mourners?
While the mourners were not crying?
اغَرَّكَdid it deceive you منof بَعضِsome of اللَياليthe nights سُكونُهاtheir stillness
فَبِتَّso you spent the night قَريراًcontent ناعِمَserene in البالِmind هانياat ease
Did the stillness of certain nights deceive you,
The calm of some nights deceived you
So that you spent the night content, serene of mind, at ease?
So you slept with a soft, tranquil mind
لقدindeed سَكَنَتthey fell still لكنbut لِتُرهِفَto sharpen لِلوَغىfor battle
دقائِقَminutes منfrom ساعاتهاtheir hours وَثوانياand seconds
They were indeed still, but only to sharpen for battle
It was calm but to prepare for the clamor
Minutes from their hours, and seconds.
Moments and seconds of its hours
إلاyet إِنَّindeed بينَbetween الكاسِthe cup والفَمand the mouth فُرجةًa gap
لِرَكضِfor the galloping of عظيماتٍgreat calamities تُشيبُturn white النَواصِياthe forelocks
Yet surely between the cup and the mouth there is a gap
Except there is a gap between the cup and the mouth
For mighty calamities to gallop through, turning forelocks white.
For mighty events that make the gray-haired youthful
فنَبِّهso rouse رَقيقاًa slight measure منof حِذاركَyour caution كلَّماwhenever
رَأَيتyou see بِأطرافِat the edges of الفُؤادِthe heart أمانياhopes
So stir a little of your caution whenever
So gently warn whoever is cautious
You see hopes at the edges of the heart.
Whenever you see wishes in the corners of the heart
محمدُMuhammad دورُthe houses of العِلمِlearning كانَتwere أَواهِلاًwell populated
بِفضلِكَthanks to you ماthere بينَamong الأَنامmankind زَواهِياradiant
Muhammad, the houses of learning were full of life,
Mohammed the role of science, its beginnings
Thanks to you, radiant among mankind.
Were peaks among the people, thanks to you
فَصَبَّحَهاthen it visited them at dawn إِلّاexcept منfor الحُزنِgrief وَالأَسىand sorrow
عَليكَfor you القَضاءُfate المُستَبِدُّthe imperious خوالياempty
Then at dawn they were left—save for grief and sorrow
Except for the sorrow and grief
For you—empty by imperious fate.
The tyrannical fate imposed it quickly on you
فَماso what لِلرَدىwith death لاmay not باركَbless اللَهُGod فيin الرَدىdeath
أَحالَturned بَشيرَthe glad-tidings bearer of الأَمسِyesterday فيin الكَونِthe world ناعِياa herald of death
What ails death, then—may God not bless death—
So why is there misery, may Allah not bless misery
That it turned yesterday's bearer of glad tidings in the world into a herald of death?
That made the bringer of glad tidings among people a mourner
بِرَغمِto the dismay of الحجاintellect وَالمجدِand glory أَنthat مسَّكhas touched you البِلىdecay
بِسوءٍwith harm فَأَضحىso became عودكَyour stem الصُلبُthe sturdy ذاوِياwithered
To the dismay of intellect and glory, decay has touched you
Despite the pilgrimage and glory, decrepitude touched you
With harm, leaving your sturdy stem withered.
With evil, so your firm wood decayed
وَأَنand that أُقفِلَwas locked البابُthe door الذيwhich كنتَyou used to be عندَهat it
تُقابِلُreceive مَلهوفاa distressed person وَتَرصُدُand await شاكياa complainant
And that the door was locked, where you used
And the door you were next to was shut
To receive the distressed and await the complainant.
Where you met expectantly and waited hopefully
محمَّدُMuhammad منwho لِلدّينfor the faith يحرُسُguards حَوضَهits pool
وَيَدرَأُand wards off بَينَamong الناسpeople عنهfrom it العَوادياthe assailants
Muhammad, who will guard the faith's pool
Mohammed who protects the religion and its reservoir
And ward off its assailants among mankind?
And wards off transgressions among people
تعرَّضَmeddled قَومٌsome people لِلكتابِwith the Book وَأَثخَنواand sorely wounded
صراحَتَهits clarity شَرحاًwith commentary عنfrom القَصدِthe intended meaning نائِياfar removed
Some people meddled with the Book and sorely wounded
Some people attacked the Book and wounded
Its clarity with commentary far removed from its intent.
Its eloquence, straying from the purpose
فَأَرسَلتَso you cast فيهِinto it نَظرَةًa gaze نَفَذَتpenetrated إلىto
صَميمِthe very heart of مُرادِthe intent of اللَهِGod إِذwhen قُمتَyou stood forth هادياas a guide
So you cast into it a gaze that penetrated to
So you looked into it with a gaze that penetrated
The very heart of God's intent, when you stood forth as a guide.
The essence of Allah's purpose when you guided
وَوَفَّقتَand you reconciled بينbetween الشَرعِdivine law وَالعَقلِand reason بَعدَماafter
قدalready اعتَقَدbelieved الإِلفانِthe two companions أَلّاthat no تَلاقياmeeting
And you reconciled divine law with reason, after
And you reconciled the Sharia and reason after
The two companions had believed there could be no meeting.
The two parties thought they would never meet
وَرُبَّand many a أُناسٍpeople حارَبواfought دينَthe faith of أحمدٍAhmad
فَثرتَso you rose up عليهمagainst them ثَورَةَthe fury of اللَيثِthe lion عادِياcharging
And many were those who fought Ahmad's faith;
And how many people fought Ahmad's religion
So you rose against them with a charging lion's fury.
So you unleashed on them the lion's rage
وَقَفتَyou stood وَأَقلامُwhile the pens of الغوايَةِerror شُرَّعٌleveled for attack
وَأقلامُand the pens of أهلِthe people of الحقِّtruth تَرنوgazed سواهياheedlessly
You stood firm while the pens of error were leveled for attack,
You stood while the pens of misguidance were let loose
And the pens of truth's people gazed on heedlessly.
And the pens of the people of truth yearned for you
وَأَفحَمتَand you silenced بِالبُرهانِwith proof كلَّevery مُناضِلٍopponent
لوif انَّكthat you لمnot تَغضَبgrew angry لَزادَhe would have increased تَمادِياin persistence
And with proof you silenced every opponent
And you silenced every debater with proof
Who, had you not grown angry, would have persisted all the more.
If you had not been angry, he would have persisted
فَفاءُواso they returned إلىto الحُسنىthe better way ولوand if لَمnot تَحُجُّهُمyou bested them in argument
لَعادَتwould have returned as زَئيراًa roar صَيحَةُthe cry of القَومِthe people داوِياresounding
So they returned to the better way; had you not bested them in argument,
So they came to propriety even if you did not argue with them
Their cry would have become a resounding roar again.
Otherwise, the people's roaring cry would have been destructive
هنيئاًcongratulations لهُمto them فَليَحملواso let them attack حَمَلاتِهمtheir assaults
فقدfor indeed أَصبحَhas become المَيدانthe battlefield بعدَكَafter you خالِياempty
Good for them! Let them launch their assaults,
Congratulations to them, so let them bear their burdens
For the battlefield is empty now that you are gone.
For after you the field has become empty
محمدُMuhammad وَفَّيتَyou gave in full المُروآتِthe noble virtues حقَّهاtheir due
وَقمتَand you rose إِليهاto them فيin حياتِكَyour life داعِياcalling
Muhammad, you gave noble virtues their due,
Mohammed you gave the mirrors their due right
And in your lifetime rose to call others to them.
And in your life you called them to it
وَعلَّمتَand you taught أهلَthe people of العُرفِbenevolence فيin العُرفِbenevolence أوجُهاًaspects
لهاthey have غُرَرٌbright distinctions مَشهورَةٌrenowned ومعانِياand meanings
And you taught the benevolent aspects of benevolence,
You taught the people of customs the aspects in customs
With renowned bright distinctions—and meanings too.
With well-known subtleties and meanings
وَعالَجتَand you treated أمراضَthe diseases of القُلوبhearts بحكمَةٍwith wisdom
تَرىyou see ظاهراًmanifest مِنfrom خَلفِهاbehind it البُرءَhealing صافِياpure
And you treated the diseases of hearts with wisdom;
You treated the diseases of hearts wisely
Behind it you see healing, manifest and pure.
Seeing the cure clearly behind it
وَأَودَعتَand you lodged فيin الطلّابِthe students أجزاءَfragments of مُهجَةٍa soul
تَرىdeems العِلمَknowledge إِنif لمnot يَعلُrise بالمرءِwith a person هاذِياbabbling
And you lodged in the students fragments of a soul
And you placed in the students parts of a brain
That deems knowledge mere babbling unless it uplifts a person.
That sees knowledge guiding if it does not know the person
مَناقِبُvirtues إنif عُدَّتare recounted تَضَوَّعُspread fragrance بَينَناamong us
كَأنّاas though we اتَّخَذناhad made ساحةَthe expanse of الرَوضِthe garden نادِياa meeting place
Virtues which, if recounted, spread their fragrance among us,
Virtues, if counted, would overflow among us
As though we had made the garden's expanse our meeting place.
As if we had made the meadow's expanse a club
ألاah نَمsleep معَwith الأَبرارِthe righteous فيin الخُلدِeternity ناعِماًat ease

Ah, sleep at ease with the righteous in eternity,
Do not sleep with the righteous in eternity comfortably
For many a night you stayed among us, wakeful in resolve and toiling.
For you remained awake with resolute purpose, suffering

You were rewarded for Islam what you deserve
For you were a keen sword in the hand of truth.
For you were a sword in the hand of truth, determined
