كَمhow often تَهيمُyou pine كمhow often تَجِبُyou throb
كمhow often تَهيyou weaken وَتَضطَرِبُand you tremble
How often you pine, how often you throb!
How often you rave, how often you become confused,
How often you weaken and tremble!
How often you wander and become disturbed,
كُلماwhenever أَقولُI say سَلاit has forgotten
جَدَّbegan anew ذلكthat اللَعِبُthe play
Whenever I say, "It has forgotten,"
Whenever I say "good morning",
that play begins anew.
That game intensifies,
كُلَّماwhenever أَقولُI say خَباit has died down
شَبَّflared up ذلكthat اللَهَبُthe blaze
Whenever I say, "It has died down,"
Whenever I say "it went well",
that blaze flares up.
That flame flares up,
أَيُّهاO الفُؤادُthe heart تماyour persistence (beginning)
ديكَyour persistence (completion) فيin الهَوىlove عَجبُa wonder
O heart, your persistence
O my heart, your persistence in love is strange,
in love is a wonder!
Does my beauty’s aloofness really have a reason?
ماnot نِفارُaversion فاتِنَتيmy enchantress
ياO تُرىI wonder لهُfor it سَبَبُa cause
My enchantress's aversion
Except that I’m tired of love for her,
has, I wonder, no cause
And by her I’m exhausted,
غيرَexcept أَنَّنيthat I كَلِفٌenamored
فيin الهَوىlove بهاwith her تَعِبُweary
except that I am enamored,
Remembering when she forgets,
weary with my love for her,
Doing what I must do,
ذاكِرٌremembering إِذاwhen نَسيَتshe forgets
قائِمٌattending بماto what يجِبُis due
remembering her when she forgets,
My charm is beauty, grace and etiquette,
doing what is due.
Has she realized who she's carried
فِتنَتيmy enchantment الجَمالُbeauty وَعُذand my excuse (beginning)
رىmy excuse (completion) الجمالُbeauty وَالأَدَبُand refinement
Beauty is my enchantment, and my excuse
Among the excellent nobility?
is beauty and refinement.
Has she realized Abbas’s status
هَلdid دَرَتthey knew بِمَنabout whom حَمَلَتthey carried
فيin المَهامهِthe wastes النُجُبُthe noble camels
Did they know whom they bore
Among those who rode (with him)?
through the wastes, those noble camels?
She hasn't been touched by it,
هَلdid دَرَتthey knew مَكانةَthe rank عَبّاAbbas (beginning)
سَAbbas (completion) بينَamong مَنthose who رَكِبواrode
Did they know Abbas's rank
No attachment in her path,
among those who rode?
Rather, she returned and took pleasure
فَهيَfor they لَمdid not يُلِمَّbefall بهاthem
فيon طريقِهاtheir road لَغَبُweariness
For they were not touched
In the desolate ruins,
by weariness along their road.
Has she seen their faces
بلrather عَدَتthey ran وَلَذَّand was delightful لهاto them
فيacross المَفاوِزِthe desert wastes الخَبَبُthe trot
Rather, they sped, delighting
In her shooting stars?
in trotting across the wastes.
She is wakeful in her abode
هلdid رَأتthey saw وجوهَهُمُtheir faces
فيin سَمائِهاtheir sky الشُهُبthe stars
Did they see their faces—
Watching and waiting,
the stars in their sky?
Have you seen those who left
فَهيَso they فيin مَنازِلهاtheir stations
ساهرٌkeeping vigil وَمُرتَقِبand watchful
So, in their stations,
In caravans, they haven't left?
they keep vigil and watch.
You didn't miss their riding
هَلhave رَأَيتَyou saw منthose who ذَهَبواwent away
قافِلينَreturning home لاmay ... not ذَهبواthey be lost
Have you seen those who went away
In the morning when they rode,
returning home? May they never be lost!
The Hejaz is their direction,
لاmay ... not عَدِمتَyou lack رَكبَهُمُtheir caravan
فيin الصَباحthe morning إِذwhen رَكِبواthey rode out
May you never lack their caravan
Religious duties and kinship ties,
in the morning when they rode out,
The Prophet seeks them
وَالحِجازُand the Hijaz قِبلَتُهُمtheir destination
وَالفُروضُand the religious duties وَالقُرَبand acts of devotion
with the Hijaz as their destination,
And the lover comes closer,
and religious duties and devotions.
Yearning pulls them
وَالنَبِيُّand the Prophet يَطلُبُهمseeks them
وَالمُحِبُّand the lover يَقتَربُdraws near
And the Prophet seeks them,
And longing attracts them,
and the lover draws near;
Majesty comforts them,
وَالحَنينُand yearning يَجذُبُهُمdraws them
وَالمَشوقُand the yearning one يَنجَذِبis drawn
and yearning draws them,
Carpentry and reputation,
and the yearning one is drawn;
Give me the good news, tell me,
وَالجَلالand majesty يُؤنِسُهمcomforts them
وَالنجارُand lineage وَالحَسَبُand ancestral honor
and majesty comforts them,
Have they come closer?
and lineage and ancestral honor.
What are the Arabs repeating
هاتِtell me ياO بَشيرُBashir (herald) أَدِرcirculate
ذِكرَهُمtheir mention أَلاhave ... not? اِقتَرَبواthey have drawn near
Tell me, O Bashir; let talk
In their lands?
of them go round—have they not drawn near?
Because of their voice, gold poured
ماwhat الذيthat which تُرَدِّدُهthey repeat it
فيin بِلادِهاtheir lands العَرَبُthe Arabs
What is it that is repeated
In their dwellings,
by the Arabs in their lands?
And the clouds garlanded them
سالَflowed فيthrough رُبوعِهِمُtheir dwellings
مِنfrom نَداهُمُtheir bounty الذَهَبُgold
Through their dwellings flowed
From its sky,
gold from their bounty.
So the poor man came to him
وَاِنبَرَتand set about تُقَلِّدُهُمimitating them
مِنfrom سمائِهاtheir sky السُحُبُthe clouds
And they set about imitating them—
In his meager home,
the clouds from their sky.
And the plains reached it
فَالفَقيرُso the poor man جاءَcame لهُto him
فيin ديارهِhis home النَشبُwealth
So to the poor man came
After the absence of vegetation,
wealth within his home.
Come on, give me the good news, tell me briefly,
وَالسُهولُand the plains واصَلَهاrejoined them
بَعدَafter هَجرِهِits desertion العُشُبthe grass
And the plains were rejoined
If you say more, you are generous,
by grass, after it had forsaken them.
Descended from the generous,
إيهِgo on ياO بَشيرُBashir (herald) أَفِضpour forth
ماwhat تَقولُyou say مُقتَضَبُbrief
Go on, O Bashir; pour forth!
Or if you refrain, our appointment
What you say is brief.
Will unfold difficulties,
إِنif تَزِدyou add more فَذوthen one endowed with كرمٍgenerosity
لِلكِرامِto the generous يَنتَسِبُbelongs
If you add more, you are a generous man,
And poetry will frolic in it,
numbered among the generous.
The poems will be preserved
أَوor تُرِدyou wish فَمَوعِدُناthen our rendezvous
ماwhat سَتَشرَحُwill expound الخُطَبُthe speeches
Or, if you wish, our rendezvous is
In their books’ chests.
with what the speeches will unfold,
وَالنَدِيُّand the gathering تَمرَحُfrolic فيin
هِit القَصائِدُthe poems القُشُبُthe fresh ones
and the gathering where
fresh poems frolic,
وَالذيand what سَتَحفَظهُwill preserve it
فيwithin صُدورِهاtheir breasts الكُتُبُthe books
and what shall be preserved
within the breasts of books.
