Alas for the traveler through darkness! The full moon has set;

the night journey has grown long, and the guide has vanished.

لهفَ راجي القِرى وحاتِمُ طيٍّ

لهفَ راجي القِرى وحاتِمُ طيٍّ

قد خَبَت نارُه بهذا الوادي

قد خَبَت نارُه بهذا الوادي

Alas for the seeker of hospitality! Hatim of Tayy—

his fire has died out in this valley.

لَهف شاكي الصَدى أخو النيلِ قد با

لَهف شاكي الصَدى أخو النيلِ قد با

تَ بعيدَ المَزارِ عن كلِّ صادي

تَ بعيدَ المَزارِ عن كلِّ صادي

Alas for the one lamenting thirst! The Nile's brother has become

far beyond the reach of every thirsty soul.

مَن يُغيثُ المظلومَ إن بات يَشكو

مَن يُغيثُ المظلومَ إن بات يَشكو

وَحُسَينٌ عَدَت عليه العوادي

وَحُسَينٌ عَدَت عليه العوادي

Who will aid the oppressed if he spends the night lamenting,

when calamities have assailed Hussein?

حَبَّذا طَيفُ نَهضَةٍ قد أَرانا

حَبَّذا طَيفُ نَهضَةٍ قد أَرانا

هُ عيانا لم يَتَّفِق في رُقادِ

هُ عيانا لم يَتَّفِق في رُقادِ

How lovely the vision of renewal he had shown us,

before our very eyes, not something that came in sleep!

فكَأَنّا من عابدينَ خُروجاً

فكَأَنّا من عابدينَ خُروجاً

نَتَهادى منها على ميعاد

نَتَهادى منها على ميعاد

So it was as though, on leaving Abdeen,

we walked gently away from it at an appointed time.

لم يَرَ الموتُ رَأيَه وَتقَضّى

لم يَرَ الموتُ رَأيَه وَتقَضّى

حُلُمٌ قد سَرى بِأَقصى البِلاد

حُلُمٌ قد سَرى بِأَقصى البِلاد

Death did not share his view, and there ended

a dream that had spread through the farthest reaches of the land.
