Have the edges of your blades grown blunt, Nizar,

or have your brown spears today become mere knotted shafts?

Or have your horses been hamstrung, or have

their forelocks been cut away, so they will not be ridden?

I never knew you to endure

humiliation, with the forefathers' sword in your right hand.

For this is war, and it has sunk

its claw into you, despite your lofty honor.

Where, then, O lions of battle, are

the claws of your brown spears and your gleaming blades?

Your swords have scratched no advancing man's

face, nor any retreating man's shoulder.

And in battle you have unfurled no banner,

    nor wheeled your lean-flanked horses.

So today the fire of your war has died,

while war's fire has blazed within the tent.

Are Hashim's curtained chambers laid bare,

and does no proud defiance stir the Hashimites?

And are its women despoiled, while not

one edge of its cleaving sword draws blood?

Do horses enter the tent of those

whose tent is pitched above the sky?

Alas for God's household, when they were brought out

from their seclusion and found no escape!

This one heads, distraught, toward the rising

sun, while that one makes for the west.

And this one stumbles onto her face,

and the other grieves for the one who fell.

Ah, alas, my grief for Zaynab,

and the women of Fatimah's line who followed Zaynab!

And Zaynab cries out to al-Mustafa,

    and al-Murtada, and Hasan al-Mujtaba.

She reproaches the clans of Ghalib,

while war has annihilated her mighty people.

But, from the enormity of what befell her,

she cries out from the heat of a heart set ablaze.

And she laments the man unjustly slain, yet

her tears leave her no time to lament.

O you lying there, of whom the blades have left

only the remnants of a hope dashed,

would you accept my being despoiled among the foes?

Far be it from you to accept my being despoiled!

Or that I should see you among them at midmorning,

cut to pieces, the east wind blowing dust upon you?

How can you look upon me, when your foes have assailed

me, despoiling me and plundering the tent?

O Death, grant me rest, for how

welcome you are today, and how sweet!
