And I see the delegations at the lodgings of Mina;
they attended, while you are absent and did not attend.

بِالشأمِin al-Sham فيin جَدَثِthe burial hollow الضَّريحِthe tomb المُلحدِwith a burial niche
May God bless the man whom I left
in al-Sham, in the burial hollow of a niche-cut tomb.

With my own two hands I lodged him in an abiding home,
remote in its location, far from visitors' rounds.
أَعنىI mean اِبنَthe son of عروةUrwa إِنَّهُindeed it قَدhas هَدَّنيcrushed me

I mean Ibn Urwa; indeed, I have been crushed
by the loss of Ibn Urwa—a crushing blow that knew no restraint.
وَغَبَرتُand I remained أُعوِلُهُI bewail him وَقَدand already أَسلَمتُهُI consigned him
لشَباto the sharp points of الأَماعِزِthe rocky ground وَالصَّفيحِand the stone slabs المُسنَدِpropped up
I remained, wailing for him, though I had consigned him
to the sharp stones of rugged ground and the propped-up slabs.
مُتَخَشّعاًhumbled لِلدَّهرِbefore Time أَلبسَI wear حُلَّةًa robe
فيamid النائِباتِcalamities بعَولَةٍwith wailing وَتَبَلُّدِand numbness
Humbled before Time, I wear a robe
of wailing and numbness amid calamities.
فَلَئِنso even if تَرَكتُكَI left you ياO مُحَمَّدُMuhammad ثاوِياًlying there
لَبماindeed often تَروحُyou go forth مَعَwith الكِرامِthe noble وَتَفتَديand ransom yourself
Though I have left you, O Muhammad, lying there,
often indeed you went forth with the noble and ransomed yourself.
فَإِذاso when ذَهَبتُI turn إِلىto العَزاءِconsolation أَرومُهُI seek it
لأُريso I may show المُكاشِحَthe spiteful foe بِالعَزاءِthrough patience تَجَلُّديmy endurance
So whenever I turn to consolation, seeking it,
to show my spiteful foe my endurance through patience,
مَنعprevented التَّعَزّيfinding solace أَنَّنيthat I لِفِراقِهِbecause of his departure
لبسَdonned العَدوthe enemy عَلَيَّagainst me جِلدَthe skin of الأَربَدِthe dusky lion
what bars me from solace is that, since his departure,
my enemy has donned against me the skin of a dusky lion.
وَنَأىand went far away الصَّديقُthe friend فَلاso no صَديقَfriend أُعِدُّهُI hold him in reserve
لِدِفاعِto ward off نائِبَةِthe calamity of الزَّمانِTime المُفسدِruinous
And my friend has gone far away; I have no friend to call upon
to ward off the calamity of ruinous Time.
إِذfor خانَنيbetrayed me عَنَتُthe harshness of الزَّمانِTime وَفاتَنيand deprived me
بِأَغَرَّof a radiant man ذيpossessed of فَجَرٍbounty كَريمِnoble in المَشهَدِpresence
For Time's harshness betrayed me and bereft me
of a radiant man of bounty, noble in presence,
مُتَبَلِّجٍbeaming لِلخَيرِtoward goodness يُشرِقُshines وَجهُهُhis face

beaming in welcome to goodness, his face shining
like the full moon on its night, with the luck of the luckiest.
وَأَرىand I see لِفَقدِكَbecause of losing you كُلَّevery أَرضٍland جُبتُهاI traversed it
وَحشاًdesolate وَإِنand even if أَهِلَتit became inhabited بِمَنby those who لَمhave not يُحمَدِbeen praised
And because I have lost you, I see every land I have traversed
as desolate, though peopled with those who are not praised.
كانَhe was الَّذيthe one who يَدراwards off العَدوthe foe بِدَفعِهِwith his resistance
فَيَرُدُّand so checks نَخوَةَthe arrogance of ذيone possessed of المِراحِswagger الأَصيَدِthe stiff-necked, haughty one
He was the one who warded off the foe with his resistance,
and checked the arrogance of the swaggering, stiff-necked one.
فَمَضَىso he went لِوجهَتِهِto his destination وَكُلُّand every مُعَمّرٍlong-lived person
يَوماًone day سَيُدرِكُهُwill overtake him حِمامُdeath المَوعِدِthe appointed hour
So he went to his destination, and every long-lived person
will one day be overtaken by death at its appointed hour.
وَالمَرءُand man رَهنُa hostage to منيةٍa destined death يُدعىhe is summoned لَهاto it
لاno بُدَّescape أسرعَswifter مِنthan رِداءِthe cloak of المُرتَديthe wearer
And man is hostage to a death to which he is summoned,
inevitably—swifter than the cloak of one who dons it.
