قالوا هَوَيتَ رَفيعاً نَيِّراً حَسَناً

قالوا هَوَيتَ رَفيعاً نَيِّراً حَسَناً

فَقُلتُ هَذي خِصالٌ حازَها القَمَرُ

فَقُلتُ هَذي خِصالٌ حازَها القَمَرُ

They said, “You fell in love with one lofty, radiant, and fair.”

They said, "You have aspired high, bright, handsome."

So I said, “These are qualities the moon possesses.”

I said, "These are traits possessed by the moon."

قالوا فَمالَكَ مِنهُ قُلتُ مُعتَذِراً

قالوا فَمالَكَ مِنهُ قُلتُ مُعتَذِراً

مِثلُ الَّذي لَكُمُ التَسليمُ وَالنَظَرُ

مِثلُ الَّذي لَكُمُ التَسليمُ وَالنَظَرُ

They said, “Then what do you have from him?” I said apologetically,

They said, "What is it to you?" I replied, apologizing,

“The same as you: greetings and gazing.”

"The same that you have, submission and consideration."

قالوا فَما الحُبُّ إِن كُنتَ اِمرَأً فَطِناً

قالوا فَما الحُبُّ إِن كُنتَ اِمرَأً فَطِناً

فَقَد تَحَيَّرَ فيهِ البَدوُ وَالحَضَرُ

فَقَد تَحَيَّرَ فيهِ البَدوُ وَالحَضَرُ

They said, “Then what is love, if you are a discerning man?

They said, "What is love, if you are a wise man?

For it has bewildered nomads and townsfolk alike.”

For it has perplexed the nomads and the settled alike."

فَقُلتُ كَالشَهدِ يَحلو عِندَ كُلِّ فَمٍ

فَقُلتُ كَالشَهدِ يَحلو عِندَ كُلِّ فَمٍ

وَفي القُلوبِ لَهيبٌ مِنهُ يَستَعِرُ

وَفي القُلوبِ لَهيبٌ مِنهُ يَستَعِرُ

So I said, “Like honey, it tastes sweet to every mouth,

I said, "It is like honey, sweet to every mouth,

And in hearts a flame from it blazes.”

And in hearts, a flame from it burns."
