عَذَلونيthey reproached me فيfor الحُبِّlove وَالعَذلُand reproach يُغويleads astray
وَرَمَونيand they pelted me بِالصَدِّwith rejection وَالصَدُّand rejection يَكويsears
They reproached me for love, and reproach leads astray.
They blamed me for love, though blame does seduce,
And they hurled rejection at me, and rejection sears.
And accused me of aloofness, though aloofness inflicts agony,
وَاِستَحَلَّواand they deemed lawful غَزويraiding me بِكُلِّwith every غَزالٍgazelle
حَلَّbecame lawful فيin حُبِّهِlove of him قِتاليfighting me وَغَزويand raiding me
And they deemed it lawful to raid me with every gazelle
And made lawful my invasion by every gazelle
For love of whom, fighting and raiding me became lawful.
That settled in his love my fighting and invasion.
تَرَكوناthey left us ماemphatic particle بَينَbetween وَجدٍlove's anguish وَشَوقٍand longing
وَالمَطاياand the mounts ماemphatic particle بَينَbetween سَوقٍdriving onward وَحَدوِand urging camels with song
They left us between love's anguish and longing,
They left us between passion and longing,
And the mounts between driving and the camel-driver's song.
And the mounts between urging and restraint.
ياO حَبيباًbeloved لَناof ours بِجيرونَin Jayrun حَتّىuntil
وَمَتىand when لِلغَرامِfor passionate love نَهوىwe love فَنَهويso we fall
O beloved of ours in Jayrun—until when?
O beloved of ours in Jeroun until when
And how long shall we love passionately, and so fall?
Shall we yearn for love and satisfy our yearning?
أُهجُروناforsake us إِنif شِئتُمُyou wish أَوصِلوناor unite with us

Forsake us if you wish, or unite with us;
Estrange us, if you wish, or unite us,
We have drunk of all that is bitter and sweet.
For we have drunk of every bitter and sweet.
