عِنديI have إِلَيكُمfor you مِنَof الأَشواقِlongings وَالبُرَحاand anguish
ماthat which صَيَّرَhas turned القَلبُthe heart مِنthrough فَرطِexcess الهَوىlove سَبَحاprayer beads
I bear such longing and anguish for you,
I have such longing and nightly sorrow for you
That, through excess of love, they have turned my heart to prayer beads.
That it has made my heart become like froth from love’s excess
أَحبابَناour beloved ones لاdo not تَظُنونيthink me سَلوَتُكُمُI have forgotten you
ماnot حالَتِhas changed الحالُthe state وَالتَبريحُand the torment ماnot بَرِحاhas ceased
Our beloved ones, do not think I have forgotten you.
My friends, do not think I have forgotten you
My state has not changed, and the torment has not ceased.
Though time has passed and farewells were said
لَوif كانَwere يَسبَحُto swim صَبٌّa lovesick man فيin مَدامِعِهِhis tears
لَكُنتُI would have been أَوَلَthe first مَنwho فيin دَمعِهِhis tears سَبَحاswam
If a lovesick man could swim in his tears,
If tears could swim, I would be the first
I would have been the first to swim in his own tears.
To swim in their sea of weeping
أَوor كُنتُI had been أَعلَمُknowing أَنَّthat البَينَseparation يَقتُلُنيkills me
ماnot بِنتُI parted عَنكُمfrom you وَلَكِنbut فاتَis gone ماwhat ذُبِحاwas slain
Or had I known that separation would kill me,
If I had known that separation would kill me
I would not have parted from you—but what is slain is gone.
I would not have parted from you, but fate had me slaughtered
ياO ساقِيَpourer الراحِwine صُدَّturn away الكَأسَthe cup عَنfrom دِنفٍa languishing man
مازالَhas not ceased مُغتَبِقاًdrinking in the evening بِالدَمعِwith tears مُصطَبِحاdrinking in the morning
O wine-pourer, keep the cup away from a languishing man,
Oh cupbearer, stop the wine from one emaciated
Who keeps drinking tears at evening and at dawn.
Who is still drowning in tears at dawn
