ياO دارَdwelling of ماوِيَّةَMawiyya بِالحائِلِat al-Ha'il
فَالسُهبِthen al-Suhb فَالخَبتَينِthen al-Khabtayn مِنof عاقِلِ'Aqil
O dwelling of Mawiyya at al-Ha'il,
O house in Mawiyya, in Al-Hail,
Then al-Suhb, then al-Khabtayn, in 'Aqil:
Surrounded by plains and Khabtain hill,
صُمَّwas deafened صَداهاits echo وَعَفاand faded رَسمُهاits traces
وَاِستَعجَمَتand it grew mute عَنto مَنطِقِthe speech of السائِلِthe questioner
Its echo has gone deaf, and its traces have faded,
It is silent, its traces have vanished,
And it has grown mute to the questioner's words.
And it no longer speaks to the questioner.
قولاyou two, say لِدودانَto Dudan عَبيدِslaves of العَصاthe rod
ماwhat غَرَّكُمdeluded you بِالأَسَدِabout the lion الباسِلِthe fearless
You two, tell Dudan, slaves of the rod:
Say to the worms, servants of the stick:
What deluded you about the fearless lion?
Why did the valiant lion enthral you?
قَدindeed قَرَّتِfound contentment العَينانِthe two eyes مِنfrom مالِكٍMalik
وَمِنand from بَنيthe sons of عَمروٍ'Amr وَمِنand from كاهِلِKahil
My two eyes have indeed been gladdened by Malik,
My eyes have been soothed by Malik
And by the sons of 'Amr, and by Kahil,
And the clans of Amr, and Kahil,
وَمِنand from بَنيthe sons of غَنمِGhanm بنِson of دودانَDudan إِذwhen
نَقذِفُwe hurl أَعلاهُمtheir uppermost عَلىupon السافِلِthe lowermost
And by the sons of Ghanm ibn Dudan, when
And the clan of Ghanam son of Dudan when
We hurled their uppermost down upon the lowermost.
We hurl their chiefs down on the lowly.
نَطعُنُهُمwe pierce them سُلكىstraight thrusts وَمَخلوجَةًand sideways thrusts
كَرَّكَyour sending back لَأمَينِtwo well-fletched arrows عَلىto نابِلِan archer
We pierced them with straight and sideways thrusts,
We stab them with thin, fine spears,
As you send two well-fletched arrows back to an archer,
As the swift she-camel stabs the roebuck.
إِذwhen هُنَّthey أَقساطٌscattered bands كَرِجلِlike a swarm of الدَبىyoung locusts
أَوor كَقَطاlike the sandgrouse of كاظِمَةَKazima الناهِلِcoming to drink
When they were in bands like a swarm of young locusts,
They were like slices of the hyena's foot,
Or like the sandgrouse of Kazima, coming to drink,
Or a wild cat gulping its drink greedily,
حَتّىuntil تَرَكناهُمwe left them لَدىat مَعرَكِa battlefield
أَرجُلِهِمtheir legs كَالخَشَبِlike timber الشائِلِjutting upward
Until we left them on a battlefield,
Until we left them in the midst of battle,
Their legs like timbers sticking up.
Their feet like shifting sand.
حَلَّتbecame lawful لِيَfor me الخَمرُwine وَكُنتُand I was اِمرَأًa man
عَنfrom شُربِهاdrinking it فيin شُغُلٍan occupation شاغِلِall-consuming
Wine has become lawful for me, though I was a man
Wine was made lawful for me, and I was a man
Kept from drinking it by all-consuming concerns.
Too busy to drink it.
فَاليَومَso today أُسقىI am given drink غَيرَnot مُستَحقِبٍtaking on a burden
إِثماًsin مِنَfrom اللَهِGod وَلاnor واغِلِan uninvited drinker
So today I am served wine, neither bearing
Today I will drink without sin
Sin before God nor drinking as an uninvited guest.
From God, and without blame.
