يا لَهْفَ هِنْدٍ إذ خَطِئنَ كاهِلاً

يا لَهْفَ هِنْدٍ إذ خَطِئنَ كاهِلاً

القاتِلِينَ المَلِكَ الحُلاحِلا

القاتِلِينَ المَلِكَ الحُلاحِلا

Alas for Hind when they missed Kahil—

O longing of Hind when they erred a shoulder

Those who slew the mighty king,

The killers of the king the smooth-skinned

خَيرَ مَعَدٍّ حَسَباً وَنَائِلا

خَيرَ مَعَدٍّ حَسَباً وَنَائِلا

وخَيرَهُمْ قَدْ عَلِمُوا شمائِلا

وخَيرَهُمْ قَدْ عَلِمُوا شمائِلا

The best of Maʿadd in ancestral honor and bounty,

Best tribe lineage and attainers

And their best in character, as they well knew.

And their best they knew well traits

نَحْنُ جَلَبْنَا القُرَّحَ القَوَافِلا

نَحْنُ جَلَبْنَا القُرَّحَ القَوَافِلا

تَالله لا يَذهَبُ شَيخي بَاطِلا

تَالله لا يَذهَبُ شَيخي بَاطِلا

We brought the full-grown, lean steeds;

We brought the caravans the glass vessels

By God, my father shall not go unavenged!

By Allah my elder will not go in vain

يَحْمِلْنَنَا وَالأسَلَ النَّوَاهِلا

يَحْمِلْنَنَا وَالأسَلَ النَّوَاهِلا

وَحَيَّ صَعْبٍ وَالوَشِيجَ الذّابِلا

وَحَيَّ صَعْبٍ وَالوَشِيجَ الذّابِلا

They carry us and the blood-drinking spears,

They will carry us and the night shadows

And the clan of Saʿb, and the slender spear-shafts,

And life of Sa'b and Al Wašīǧ the withering

مُسْتَثْفِرَاتٍ بالحَصَى جَوَافلا

مُسْتَثْفِرَاتٍ بالحَصَى جَوَافلا

يَسْتَشْرِفُ الأوَاخِرُ الأوَائِلا

يَسْتَشْرِفُ الأوَاخِرُ الأوَائِلا

Cruppered with gravel, galloping headlong,

Seeking pardon with pebbles torrents

The hindmost strain to see the foremost,

The last descry the first

حَتى أُبِيدَ مَالِكاً وَكَاهِلاً

حَتى أُبِيدَ مَالِكاً وَكَاهِلاً

Until I annihilate Malik and Kahil.

Until Malik and shoulder were destroyed
