Ah, may your morning be happy, you timeworn ruins!
O ruins of days gone by
And can one who lived in bygone ages have a happy morning?
Do you sense the morn, though your glory has passed?
وَهَلand can يَعِمَنenjoy a happy morning إِلّاexcept سَعيدٌone fortunate مُخَلَّدٌimmortal

And can any have a happy morning but one fortunate and immortal,
Only the carefree and immortal sense the morn
with few cares, never spending the night in dread?
Little troubled, not spending nights awake

And can one have a happy morning whose latest acquaintance was
Can one newly wed sense the morn
thirty months past, within three years?
When still green, less than a year wed?

Salma yet believes she’ll forever see
of the wild herds, or eggs on a soft-soiled, much-frequented plain.
Game of the wilds or eggs in the bird nests

Those nights with Salma, when she showed you a high-set bosom
Salma, your nights have made me a sapling
and a neck like a white gazelle's, never bare of ornaments.
Erect, virile, never slumbering as dawn breaks

“You’ve grown old!” jested Bisbasah one day
have grown old, and that men like me are no good at pleasure.
“Frolicking does not become the likes of you!”

By God, I’ve sported and caroused nights on end
with a charming woman, like the outline of a statue.
With a beauty rivaling perfection’s artwork

east wind and north wind, in the camps of returning travelers.
Zephyr, then north wind, gatekeepers switching posts

Gentle, unabashed, tranquil in his arms

Slender at the fold of her waist, not broad-bellied,
Smooth of waist, of ample hips, yet no wanton,
when she slips away, quivering, never without perfume.
Guileless, unfeigning, honest in her welcome

I glimpsed her from afar, the stars like lanterns
were in Yathrib; even her nearest home required a far-reaching gaze.
Of monks at night glowing for evensong prayers

After her folks had slept I climbed to her window
like monks' lamps, blazing for travelers returning home.

“God damn you, you’ll expose me!” she exclaimed
as water's ripples rise, stage after stage.
“Have you no eyes for the night guard or propriety?”
فَقالَتthen she said سَباكَmay He take you captive اللَهُGod إِنَّكَindeed you فاضِحيwill disgrace me

She said, “May God take you captive! You will disgrace me.
“By God, not even beheading would budge me from here!”
Do you not see the nighttime talkers and the people around me?”
I vowed, though in truth, her honor I’d not mar

As we bickered my heart softened for her
even if they cut off my head and limbs beside you.”
And won over, the proud girl acquiesced with grace

I swore to her by God, with a sinner's oath,
I woke her husband, while she woke in my arms
that they were surely asleep—no talk, no one warming by a fire.
Sour-faced, downcast, brooding with suspicion's disdain
فَلَمّاthen when تَنازَعناwe exchanged الحَديثَwords وَأَسمَحَتand she yielded

Then, when we had exchanged words and she yielded,
Gripped by the mute rage of a wronged spouse
I bent down a swaying bough bearing fruit-clusters.
Determined to end me, though no blood I’d shed

We came to a happy accord, and our words grew tender,
To kill me, when my lover was his wife
and I tamed her: the unruly one yielded utterly.
When her kiss tasted like honey from the comb?

was dust-dark, suspicious, and troubled in spirit.
Truly, harming others was not in my nature

When I was drunk with passion for his wife
intent on killing me, though the man is no killer.
As a lovelorn man pining for his beloved

Will he kill me, when the Mashrafi sword lies beside me,
Salma knew though her husband fumed, I was but
and sharpened, steel-blue points like ghouls' fangs?
A boasting youth who would never dare defile

What could he do if I recalled past trysts
and has no sword, nor is he an archer.
With gazelles dancing through dunes in the moonlight?

Willowy as oryx does, buxom and bright

Following reckless passions heedless of reason’s voice
that the fellow raves and is no man of action.

Straddling the saddle without any fail

Often I set out at dawn while birds are still in their nests,
I snatched partridges at dawn from their nests
for pasture sprung from the early autumn rain, its scout alone.
As lynxes helplessly yowled their dismay

dark bay, as though she were a loom's beater.
Not desiring riches or luxury’s display

its legs patterned like mantles of fine striped cloth.
And glory is still within reach for one such as I

A man is still a man while his soul remains proud
were at the gallop of horses wheeling in their horsecloths.
Undaunted by fate and refusing to bend or comply!
فَجالَthen wheeled الصُوارُthe wild-cattle herd وَاِتَّقَينَand they sheltered بِقَرهَبٍbehind a massive old bull
طَويلِlong of الفِراback وَالرَوقِand horn أَخنَسَsnub-nosed ذَيّالِlong-tailed
The wild herd wheeled, and the cows sheltered behind a massive old bull,
long-backed and long-horned, snub-nosed and long-tailed.
فَعادىthen it pursued successively عِداءًa successive chase بَينَbetween ثَورٍa bull وَنَعجَةٍand a cow
وَكانَand was عِداءُsuccessive pursuit of الوَحشِwild game مِنّيon my part عَلىin بالِmind
Then my mount overtook a bull and a cow in swift succession,
and this successive pursuit of game was what I had in mind.
كَأَنّيas though I بِفَتخاءِon one broad of الجَناحَينِboth wings لَقوَةٍa she-eagle
صَيودٍkeen at hunting مِنَamong العِقبانِeagles طَأطَأتُI bent low شِملاليmy swift mount
As though I rode a broad-winged she-eagle,
a hunter among eagles, when I bent my swift mount low.
تَخَطَّفُshe snatches خَزّانَmale hares of الشُرَيَّةِal-Shariyya بِالضُحىin the morning

She snatches the hares of al-Shariyya in the morning,
while the foxes of Awral have hidden from her in their dens.
كَأَنَّas though قُلوبَhearts of الطَيرِbirds رَطباًfresh وَيابِساًand dry

As though the birds' hearts, fresh and dry,
beside her nest were jujubes and old, shriveled dates.
فَلَوfor if أَنَّit were that ماonly أَسعىI strive لِأَدنىfor the barest مَعيشَةٍlivelihood
كَفانيwould suffice me وَلَمand would not أَطلُبI seek قَليلٌa little مِنَof المالِwealth
For if I strove only for the barest livelihood,
a little wealth would suffice me, and I would seek no more.
وَلَكِنَّماbut rather أَسعىI strive لِمَجدٍfor glory مُؤَثَّلٍfirmly rooted
وَقَدand may يُدرِكُattain المَجدَglory المُؤَثَّلَfirmly rooted أَمثاليmen like me
But I strive for firmly rooted glory,
and men like me may attain such firmly rooted glory.
وَماand not المَرءُa man ماas long as دامَتlasts حُشاشَةُthe last remnant of نَفسِهِhis soul
بِمُدرِكِable to encompass أَطرافِthe limits of الخُطوبِlife's trials وَلاnor آليone who spares effort
No man, so long as a remnant of life remains in his soul,
can reach the bounds of life's trials, nor will he spare his effort.
