You have strayed, you there, as a camel strays,

and your absence at the emir’s has grown long.

You stayed two days and their nights,

and a third, showered with abundant kindness.

A day with ʿArīb and her graciousness,

even if the days grow long, is a short day.

She has songs one never tires

of, nor do they wear thin with repetition.

You are not to blame, Abū Jaʿfar,

for preferring amusement and a day of joy.

So grant us a share of your company, for

you were not averse to our gathering.

    أصارك الرحمن خير المصير

    And come to us without abasement;

may the All-Merciful bring you to the best destination.

If I have neither singing nor

a lute, I have wagering at nardashir,

and recollection of the learning whose masters

the ravages of changing ages have carried away.

And its path remains fresh among us,

its landmarks held within our breasts.

So praise be to God for all that

He has bestowed and tested us with; and to my Lord be thanks.
