نَحنُwe أَولىmost entitled الناسِthe people بِالأَندَلُسِto al-Andalus
Young men of the Maghreb, onward to battle!
O youths of the Maghreb, come for jihad
We, of all people, have the greatest claim to al-Andalus.
We have the foremost right to al-Andalus
نَحنُwe أَبطالheroes فَتاهاher young warrior ابنِson of زِيادZiyad
وَلَهاand for her نُرخِصُwe hold cheap غاليprecious الأَنفُسِlives
We are the heroes of her young warrior, Ibn Ziyad,
We are its brave heroes, sons of Ziyad
And for her we hold our precious lives cheap.
For it we sacrifice our precious souls
قِفstand عَلىon الشاطئthe shore وَاِنظُرand look هَلdo تَرىyou see
لَهَبَthe blaze النارِof the fire وَآثارَand the traces السَفينof the ships
Stand on the shore and look: do you see
Stand on the shore, look - can you see
The blaze of the fire and the traces of the ships?
The flames of fire, traces of ships
يَومَon the day لاnot طارقُTariq عادَreturned القهقريbackward
لاno وَلاnor آباؤناour fathers أُسدُlions العَرينof the lair
On the day when Tariq did not turn back,
The day Tariq will not return defeated
No, nor did our fathers, the lions of the lair;
Nor our fathers, lions of the den
يَومَon the day لاnot عَزمُthe resolve الجِبالِof the mountains الراسياتfirmly rooted
مُشبهٌresembling عَزمَthe resolve شَبابِof the young men المَغربِof the Maghreb
On the day when the resolve of the firmly rooted mountains did not
The day the resolve of firm mountains
Resemble the resolve of the Maghreb's young men;
Resembles not the resolve of Maghreb's youth
لاno وَلاnor همةُthe determination بَحرِof the sea الظُلماتof darkness
أَشبَهَتresembled هِمّةَthe determination جَيشِof the army العَرَبِof the Arabs
No, nor did the determination of the Sea of Darkness
Nor the ambition of the dark seas
Resemble the determination of the Arab army.
Compared to the ambition of the Arab army
ياO فَتىyoung man المَغربِof the Maghreb سَلهاask her مَنwho بَنيbuilt
دارَهاher palace الحَمراءَred تَسمَعyou will hear عَجَباa marvel
O young man of the Maghreb, ask her who built
O lad of the Maghreb, ask who built it
Her Red Palace; you will hear a marvel.
Its red home, you will hear wonder
فَأعِدهاso restore her لِذَويِهاto her people وَطَناas a homeland
تَحسدenvies الدُنياthe world عَلَيهِfor it العَرَباthe Arabs
So restore her to her people as a homeland
So prepare it for its people, a homeland
For which the world will envy the Arabs.
That the Arabs envy and marvel
نَحنُwe أَهلوهاher people وَإِنand if هَبَّتblows صَباan east wind
مِنfrom رُباهاher hills فَعَلَيناthen upon us أَوَّلاfirst
We are her people, and if an east wind blows
We made it prosperous, and if the morning breeze
From her hills, it blows upon us first.
Blew from its growth, to us belongs the first right
جَنَّةُthe garden الفَردوسِof Paradise هاتيكَthose الرُبىhills
كَيفَhow تَبقىremain لِسِواناfor others than us نُزُلاa lodging
Those hills are the garden of Paradise;
The paradise of immortality, that prosperity
How can they remain a lodging for anyone but us?
How can it remain, while we still draw breath?
