You came to read me a page from the past,

its text love and sorrow, among my papers.

My friend, leave it and take another, for I

have already recognized it from its first letter.

My friend, leave it: I have buried my hopes,

    and my pleasures—alas!—and my revelry.

And my ribs lie empty; now passionless

are my love poems and descriptions of fair women.

And nights when I won from Time,

despite his stinginess, the blessing of tenderness:

wakeful in their darkness, I drew light

for my heart by kissing a cheek and a hand,

and a mouth—whenever it complained of love's pain,

I clung to it, plucking and sipping—

and eyelids: between their violent slaying

and their gentle slaying I find myself.

    شَيّعتها المُنى بِربِّك يَكفي

    My friend, enough—for nights have passed away;

hopes saw them off. By your Lord, enough!
