    They sold the country to their enemies out of greed

    for money; yet it was their homelands they sold.

    والله ما عطشوا يوماً ولا جاعوا

    They might be excused had hunger forced them;

    by God, they never thirsted a day, nor went hungry.

    And shame-tainted sustenance, even in hunger, is spat out

    by a soul with scruples against accepting shame.

    That country—if you call it a homeland—

    they do not understand; greed stands in understanding's way.

    Our enemies have been money changers ever since they existed,

    and we have been farmers since we came down to earth.

    You have not reversed the Creator's order; rather, you were brought back

    to the Jews by kinship and innate traits.

    O seller of the land, you paid no heed to the outcome,

    nor did you learn that the adversary is deceitful.

    You have indeed wronged your descendants—oh, my anguish!

    And they are slaves, servants, and followers.

    إن السَّرابَ كما تدريه لمَّاعُ

    And the glittering gold you acquire has deceived you;

    indeed, the mirage, as you know, also glitters.

    Think of your death in the land where you grew up,

    and leave for your grave a plot of land an armspan long.
