قم للمعلم وفّه التبجيلا
Shawqi says, unaware of my affliction:
Shawqi says though unaware of my plight,
“Rise for the teacher and pay him due reverence.”
Stand for the teacher and give him utmost respect.

من كان للنشء الصغار خليلا
Sit down—I would give my life for you! Can someone be revered
Sit down my dear, can one who's a friend
Who has been a close companion to little children?
To little children, be anything but respected?

The prince's words perturb me, saying
“The teacher is almost a messenger.”
The teacher is almost an apostle.

Had Shawqi tried teaching for an hour,
If Shawqi tried teaching an hour
He would have spent his life in misery and listlessness.
He'd live miserably inactive and confused.

Enough to fill the teacher with distress and gloom
The teacher bears anxiety and gloom
Is the sight of notebooks, morning and evening.
Seeing notebooks morning and evening.

A hundred upon a hundred—once they have been marked,
Hundreds on hundreds, if corrected
Blindness finds a path toward the eyes.
The blind find a way to eyes.

Your father wouldn't be stingy with eyes.

For instance, and take the Book as my guide,
Using the book as evidence, for example.

What is neither ambiguous nor commonplace.
What isn't ambiguous or overused.

And his fellows from the earliest centuries.
And his peers from eras of old.

Raise the annexed noun and the object.

O you who seek death, I have found it -
Indeed, the teacher does not live long.
The teacher cannot live long.
