أعيديrestore إلىto المضنىthe ailing one وإنْand even if بَعُدis far المدىthe distance
بُلَهْنِيَةَthe carefree ease العيشِof life الذيthat كانwas أرغْداmore comfortable
Restore to the ailing one, though the distance be great,
Take me back, though the journey be far,
the carefree ease of life that once was so blissful.
To the blissful life that once was most plenteous.
تباركblessed be هذاthis الوجهُface ماhow أوْضَحَbright السَّنىthe radiance
وماand how أطيبَsweet المفْتَرَّthe smiling mouth والمتورِّداand the rosy cheek
Blessed be this face—how bright its radiance!
Blessed be this face that lit up the years,
And how sweet the smiling mouth and rosy cheek!
And sweet was the jesting and flower-gathering.
فقدتكِI lost you فقْدانَas one loses الصباyouth وهلand can امرؤٌa person
توَّلىhas departed صِباهhis youth اليومَtoday يرجعهbring it back غداtomorrow
I lost you as one loses youth; and can any man
Losing you was like losing my youth—can a man
whose youth has fled today bring it back tomorrow?
Reclaim his youth when it once slipped away?
فقدتكِI lost you لكنِّيbut I فقدتُI lost ثلاثةًthree things
سواكbesides you فؤاديmy heart والأمانيَّand hopes والهدىand guidance
I lost you, but I lost three things
Losing you, though, meant losing not just one—
besides you: my heart, my hopes, and guidance.
My heart, my hopes, my guidance were lost.
وأبقيتِand you left ليfor me غيرَbesides القنوطdespair ثلاثةًthree things
هواكlove for you وسقميand my sickness الحنينَlonging المؤَّيداsustained
And besides despair, you left me three things:
You left me with only three things—
love for you, my sickness, and longing kept alive.
My love for you, my sickness, my ceaseless yearning.

O Wadi al-Rumman, may you never be a pleasant valley,
O valley of pomegranates, you were no true valley
if she does not enjoy your shade forever.
If she never strolled in your shade.

And O Wadi al-Rumman, may its taste never please,
O valley of pomegranates, your taste turned bitter
if I do not stretch a hand toward that fruit.
When I could no longer reach out my hand to your fruits.
وياand O واديvalley الرمانof pomegranates واهاًah! وعندهمand in their eyes
حرامٌforbidden علىfor المحزونthe sorrowful one أنْto يتنهَّداsigh
And O Wadi al-Rumman—ah! Yet in their eyes,
O valley of pomegranates, alas! Among them
it is forbidden for the sorrowful to sigh.
It's wrong for the grieving to sigh.
كأنيَas though I لمnot أنزلْI lodged دياركَyour dwellings مرةonce
ولمand not ألقَI found فيamong أهليكyour people حباًlove ولاnor ندىgenerosity
As though I had never once stayed in your dwellings,
It's as if I never dwelled in your land,
nor found among your people love or generosity;
Never loved your people, never knew them.

nor had a beloved given me a cup of wine,
No sweetheart ever poured me the wine-cup,
whose front teeth I drank from, with the cup, as from a watering place;
With the cup, herself, my succor and guide.
ولمand not تُوحِyou inspired ليto me شعراًpoetry ولاnor قمتُI rose منشداًreciting

ولمand not يَرْوِrecite شعريmy poetry عندليبُكَyour nightingale منشداsinging
nor had you inspired me with poetry, nor had I risen to recite,
No poem did she recite, nor I sing verses for her,
nor had your nightingale recited my verses in song.
Nor trill any song, nightingale-wise.

My brother and my beloved, I hoped you would bring me comfort.
My brother, my dear one, I hoped you'd be happy.
May the Most Merciful forgive you—you brought no comfort.
May the Merciful forgive you your cheerlessness.

Did you not see me in Egypt seeking a healer?
Did you not see me in Egypt seeking a cure,
And my hovering over the abyss of death alarmed you.
Looking to you to save me from the abyss?
ألمdid ... not? ترنيyou see me فيin مضجعيmy bed متقلّباًtossing and turning
أُقَلَّبُI turn فيthrough الأفلاكthe celestial spheres طرفاًa gaze مُسهَّداkept sleepless
Did you not see me tossing in my bed,
Did you not see me tossing sleepless in bed,
turning a sleepless gaze through the heavenly spheres?
Spinning endlessly, drifting without anchor?
ومنand of عجبٍwonder أنَّاthat we شبيهانboth alike فيin الهوىlove
بِمنْby the one whom أنتyou تهوىyou love هلdid أطَقتَyou manage to bear تجّلداfortitude
And it is a wonder that we are alike in love:
Strange that we are alike in our love—
By the one you love, were you able to remain steadfast?
For the ones we desire, could we master our yearning?
